Job Description
A client of Insight Global is looking for an experienced Controller to join their team! This individual will manage and oversee the Accounting Department’s daily operations and ensures that all financial and budgetary information is accurate, timely, and in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Protects tribal assets by ensuring adherence to established internal controls. Establishes fiscal support opportunities for departments through the management of grant administration. Honors and represents the mission, vision, and values of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the Accounting Department.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Lead and manage the Accounting Department, including coaching, training, performance management, delegation, and discipline, as well as recruiting, interviewing, and hiring accounting and grant staff.
• Foster effective communication and collaboration by hosting regular staff meetings and coordinating accounting related activities across departments.
• Direct and oversee all internal accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger, accounts payable, payroll, fixed assets, and related financial systems.
• Maintain, enhance, and enforce internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with accounting standards and governmental regulations.
• Review and approve expenditures, including funded programs, contracts, and grant related projects, ensuring proper use of tribal and grant funds.
• Develop, implement, and maintain standardized accounting policies, procedures, and ordinances in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable regulations.
• Oversee governmental and grant budgeting processes, including budget development, monitoring, reporting, and variance analysis across tribal and grant funds.
• Prepare and analyze financial and budgetary reports, including monthly summaries of receipts, expenditures, and fund activity for executive leadership and presentation to Tribal Council.
• Analyze financial trends and historical results, identify exceptions, compare performance against budgets and prior periods, and provide recommendations to leadership.
• Coordinate with internal and external auditors to ensure compliance with accounting standards, grant requirements, and governmental regulations.
• Establish and administer cost effective standards for purchasing and property management.
• Pursue grant funding opportunities for program continuation or expansion and refer applicable funding sources to other departments as appropriate.
• Contribute to overall organizational success by supporting team initiatives and performing other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• Seven (7) years of progressive experience overseeing centralized accounting operations for multiple fund programs and/or accounts; a combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.
• Minimum of three (3) years of management experience, including supervising, training, evaluating staff, and fostering effective team performance.
• Strong knowledge of accounting, finance, fund accounting, and business administration, including compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards.
• Experience and/or working knowledge of tribal governance structures, including traditional forms of government, tribal customs, and cultural considerations.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and community funding sources, including grant funding processes, policies, and procedures, across multiple funding streams.
• Demonstrated expertise in budget development, preparation, monitoring, and control.
• Proficiency in financial systems and technology, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and accounting software in a Windows environment (e.g., MIP).
• Strong analytical skills, including the ability to prepare, review, and interpret financial and operational reports, identify issues, assess risk and impact, and recommend effective solutions.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear presentations, reports, and guidance to diverse audiences.
• Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with individuals from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
• Ability to interpret and apply applicable federal, state, county, and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
• Strong ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, meet strict deadlines, and perform effectively in a high accountability environment.
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
• CPA license is preferred.
