Location: Lynchburg, VA
Type: Full-Time
Compensation: Competitive (based on experience; typically, $110K–$130K range)

About the Role
We are seeking a Tooling Engineer to support advanced engineering efforts focused on automated inspection systems, robotic tooling, and remote operations within the nuclear industry.
This role plays a key part in supporting nuclear outages, inspections, and maintenance activities, where specialized robotics and automated systems are used in high-radiation and confined environments.
You will work at the intersection of automation, robotics, and nondestructive examination (NDE) to develop, maintain, and improve systems that ensure safe, high-quality inspection and maintenance of critical nuclear components.

Key Responsibilities:
Design, integrate, and support automated inspection tooling and robotic systems used in nuclear environments

Work with cross-functional teams to develop inspection methods, tooling designs, and execution strategies

Support and optimize automated NDE systems, including ultrasonic, eddy current, and visual inspection technologies

Develop scan plans, inspection paths, and automation routines to ensure full coverage and repeatability

Integrate and troubleshoot systems involving:

Robotics (crawlers, pipe robots, ROVs)
Motion control systems and PLCs
Sensors, cameras, and radiation monitoring tools

Support deployment of robotic and remote systems during outages, including:

Inspection robots for piping, vessels, and containment areas
Decontamination and cleaning systems
Remote manipulators and tooling for maintenance work

Perform feasibility studies, testing, and validation of new tooling and automation concepts

Lead troubleshooting and continuous improvement of tooling systems used in field operations

Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements

Document system performance, calibration, and maintenance requirements

Support root cause analysis and corrective actions related to inspection or tooling issues

Train technicians and field teams on use of automated equipment

What You’ll Bring

Strong mechanical and automation aptitude with a systems-level mindset
Attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety
Ability to manage multiple technical projects and priorities
Effective communication skills with both technical and non-technical teams
A proactive approach to innovation and continuous improvement

Why This Role Matters
This role directly supports the deployment of advanced robotic and remote technologies used to:

Inspect critical nuclear systems in high-radiation environments
Reduce human exposure and improve safety
Enable efficient outage execution and maintenance operations

Your work will contribute to safe, reliable nuclear power generation and the advancement of clean energy technologies.
