Job Description
An O&G client in the Houston area is seeking a Solutions Engineer to support the design, enhancement, and ongoing success of custom-built applications used for environmental, economic, and operational planning. This role sits at the intersection of business, engineering, and technology—acting as the voice of the end user while working closely with software development teams.
The Solutions Engineer will support a newly developed inventory and drilling economics application that helps planners and engineers evaluate drilling opportunities across existing and potential well sites. The system models probability of success, projected profitability, and initiates downstream workflows when new drilling decisions are approved.
This role is ideal for someone with a background in reservoir engineering, petroleum engineering, or planning, who enjoys translating complex business and engineering needs into clear requirements and actionable enhancements.
Key Responsibilities
• Serve as the primary product owner and business liaison for a custom application supporting drilling inventory, economic modeling, and planning decisions
• Partner with planners, environmental teams, and drilling engineers to understand workflows, pain points, and decision-making processes
• Translate business needs into clear requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria for the software development team
• Support modeling features that evaluate:
○ Probability of hitting oil based on proximity to existing wells
○ Economic outcomes and projected profitability of potential drilling locations
• Support and evolve operational workflows within the application, including:
○ Initiation of scheduling processes for drilling equipment and field setup
○ Coordination of next steps once a new well is approved
• Act as an advocate for end users by identifying opportunities to improve usability, functionality, and overall value of the application
• Participate in daily collaboration with the software development team (developers, architects, QA) throughout the SDLC
• Assist with user testing, validation, and rollout of new features and enhancements
• Provide ongoing support, guidance, and explanation of application capabilities to end users
• Help prioritize enhancements based on business value and operational impact
This position is required to sit onsite in downtown Houston 5 days / week and offers and hourly rate range of $65-80/hr based on knowledge and years of experience.
