Process Safety Engineer

Description:
He or she is responsible for complex technical work in a wide range of EHS disciplines. The EHS Engineer will lead process safety projects . He or She will serve as process safety resource for the EHS team, interacting with many multi-disciplinary teams (manufacturing engineering, materials development, chemical engineering, factory design, facility engineering, etc.); ensure regulatory compliance can be met in new and proposed changes to equipment and processes, facilities and designs; perform process and facility risk assessments, and implement EHS and industry best practices. The engineer will play a key role in the sustainable design, change managed operation of business.

The overall charter is risk and hazard reduction and pollution prevention across all operations. The ideal candidate takes pride in his/her knowledge of process, regulations, analytical abilities, organization skills, attention to detail and ability to solve problems quickly and creatively.

Roles and Responsibilities:
• Lead efforts for modeling scenarios and working with external consultants/ partners as needed to conduct modeling such as CFD, FDS, PHAST, Canary, iPRISM, ALOHA, and other risk modeling tools.
• Ensure Process Safety Management, Risk Management Program compliance requirements and EHS policies, standards, procedures, and chemical process hazard guidelines are all met.
• Facilitate Risk Assessments: HAZID, HAZOP, Equipment Safety Reviews, Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), Offsite Consequence Analysis (OCA), FMEA studies, Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) and health risk reduction studies and recommend risk mitigation measures for identified hazards.
• Lead/Assist other engineers in various process safety calculations related to e. g. the design of new emergency relief systems, the evaluation of existing emergency relief system designs, dispersion analysis, flammability analysis, Electrical rea Classification (EAC).
• Work with engineering teams to develop and implement solutions for mitigating or controlling identified hazards and risks.
• Support startup (PSSR) and equipment commissioning operations through creative problem solving to meet aggressive timelines while maintaining safe and compliant operation.
• Conduct/Participate in EHS audits and investigations and provide leadership for the site’s Management of Change (MOC) program.
• Complete additional assignments, projects, and tasks, as assigned by the site EHS leader.

• B. S. in Engineering (Chemical, Process Safety or closely related industry), M.S. preferred.
• At least 5 years of related work experience in process safety management.
• Experience leading or facilitating PHAs, HAZOPs, DHAs and Risk Assessments.
• Working knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, EPA and various state agency regulations, international regulations a plus
• Ability to read and understand Process and Instrument Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Architectural permit sets, CAD drawings.
• Creative, flexible, analytical, and detailed oriented with ability to influence and achieve results through others.
• Interprets, recommends, and provides guidance for local, state, and federal regulations across all EHS disciplines.
• Interacts with Senior Leadership and program management on project milestones and status. Escalates issues in effective manner with creative problem-solving solutions.
• Experience interacting with interdisciplinary project teams and international partners.
• Experience with data visualization and data analysis.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate technical information in a concise way to a non-technical audience, and vice versa.
• Ability to manage and organize multiple projects with competing priorities and different timescales (i.e.: checkpoints with long-term goals while completing shorter term goals).
• CFSP/CFSE, CSP, CHMM, RSO, LSO, CIH certification(s) a plus.
