Mechanical Project Engineer
Data Center Construction Project
Position Summary
The Mechanical Project Engineer supports the planning, coordination, execution, and quality delivery of mechanical systems on large-scale data center construction projects. This role works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, design teams, subcontractors, commissioning teams, and clients to ensure HVAC, chilled water, piping, plumbing, and mechanical infrastructure systems are installed safely, on schedule, within budget, and according to project specifications.
The ideal candidate has a strong technical understanding of mechanical construction systems and is capable of managing project documentation, procurement, field coordination, quality control, and commissioning activities in a fast-paced mission-critical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Project Coordination
Support the management of mechanical construction activities from preconstruction through project turnover.
Coordinate with mechanical subcontractors, engineers, vendors, and field teams to ensure successful project execution.
Assist with planning and sequencing mechanical installations.
Monitor project progress and identify potential schedule or construction challenges.
Participate in project coordination meetings and communicate project updates to stakeholders.
RFI & Submittal Management
Review and process Requests for Information (RFIs), submittals, shop drawings, and mechanical design documents.
Coordinate reviews between engineering teams, consultants, and subcontractors.
Maintain mechanical documentation logs and tracking reports.
Ensure mechanical systems are constructed in accordance with approved submittals and project specifications.
Track document approvals and implementation in the field.
Procurement & Equipment Management
Assist with procurement activities for mechanical equipment and materials.
Track long-lead items including chillers, cooling towers, CRAHs, pumps, heat exchangers, air handling equipment, piping systems, and associated controls.
Coordinate equipment delivery schedules with construction activities.
Monitor material inventories and identify procurement risks.
Support vendor communication and equipment issue resolution.
Field Engineering & Construction Support
Conduct regular field walks to verify installation progress and quality.
Coordinate with superintendents and subcontractors to address field issues.
Assist with installation planning, work package reviews, and construction logistics.
Monitor compliance with construction drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
Support resolution of design conflicts and constructability concerns.
Cost Control & Project Reporting
Assist with tracking project budgets and mechanical cost forecasts.
Review invoices, purchase orders, subcontractor change requests, and pay applications.
Support change order management and cost impact analysis.
Prepare project reports, progress updates, and schedule status summaries.
Monitor productivity and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements.
Quality Assurance & Commissioning Support
Support project quality control initiatives and inspection activities.
Participate in mechanical system inspections and testing.
Track punch list items and corrective actions through completion.
Assist with startup, functional testing, and commissioning activities.
Coordinate turnover documentation, O&M manuals, and as-built drawings.
Safety Compliance
Promote and support project safety initiatives.
Participate in job hazard analyses, safety meetings, and site inspections.
Ensure mechanical contractors comply with project safety standards and procedures.
Support implementation of OSHA and client-specific safety requirements.
Help identify and mitigate project risks associated with mechanical construction activities.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
1-5 years of experience in mechanical construction, project engineering, MEP coordination, or related roles.
Understanding of HVAC, piping, plumbing, chilled water, and mechanical infrastructure systems.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, P&IDs, specifications, and equipment submittals.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting mission-critical, data center, industrial, or large commercial construction projects.
Familiarity with commissioning processes and equipment startup activities.
Experience with Procore, Autodesk Build, BIM 360, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, or Microsoft Project.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
Knowledge of BIM coordination and clash detection processes.
Understanding of mechanical equipment procurement and project logistics.
