Electrical Project Engineer
Data Center Construction Project
Position Summary
The Electrical Project Engineer supports the planning, coordination, execution, and delivery of electrical systems on large-scale data center construction projects. This role works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, electrical subcontractors, design teams, commissioning personnel, and client representatives to ensure medium-voltage, low-voltage, power distribution, backup power, and critical electrical infrastructure systems are installed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with project specifications.
The ideal candidate possesses strong technical knowledge of electrical construction and is capable of supporting procurement, documentation management, field coordination, quality control, and commissioning activities in a fast-paced mission-critical environment.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Project Coordination
Support the management of electrical construction activities from preconstruction through project turnover.
Coordinate with electrical subcontractors, engineers, vendors, and field teams to ensure successful project execution.
Assist with planning installation sequences and construction logistics.
Monitor project progress and communicate schedule impacts or project risks.
Participate in coordination meetings and assist with project reporting.
RFI & Submittal Management
Review and manage Requests for Information (RFIs), submittals, shop drawings, and electrical design documents.
Track approval status and maintain accurate document logs.
Coordinate reviews between design teams, consultants, and subcontractors.
Ensure construction activities align with approved plans and specifications.
Support implementation of design revisions and field changes.
Procurement & Material Management
Assist with procurement of electrical equipment and materials.
Track long-lead equipment including switchgear, transformers, generators, UPS systems, PDUs, bus duct systems, and electrical distribution equipment.
Coordinate equipment deliveries and material staging requirements.
Communicate with vendors regarding delivery schedules and equipment issues.
Monitor procurement activities to support project milestones.
Field Engineering & Construction Support
Conduct regular field walks to verify installation progress and compliance.
Coordinate with field supervision and subcontractors to resolve construction challenges.
Support installation planning and constructability reviews.
Verify installations conform to approved drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
Assist with tracking manpower, productivity, and progress metrics.
Budget & Cost Control
Assist in tracking project budgets, commitments, and expenditures.
Review invoices, purchase orders, and subcontractor pay applications.
Support change order management and cost impact evaluations.
Prepare project reports and schedule updates.
Identify potential cost risks and support mitigation planning.
Quality Assurance & Commissioning Support
Participate in inspections, testing, and quality control activities.
Assist with tracking punch list items and corrective actions.
Support equipment startup, energization planning, and commissioning activities.
Coordinate turnover documentation, O&M manuals, testing reports, and as-built drawings.
Work with commissioning teams to ensure successful system turnover and client acceptance.
Safety Compliance
Promote and support project safety initiatives.
Participate in safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and field inspections.
Ensure electrical work is performed in compliance with OSHA requirements, NFPA standards, project safety plans, and applicable codes.
Assist in identifying and mitigating electrical construction risks.
Support a culture of safety, accountability, and operational excellence.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
1-5 years of experience in electrical construction, project engineering, MEP coordination, or related roles.
Understanding of electrical systems, power distribution, backup power systems, and construction methods.
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, specifications, and equipment submittals.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience supporting data center, mission-critical, industrial, or large commercial construction projects.
Familiarity with medium-voltage systems, generators, UPS systems, switchgear, and critical power infrastructure.
Experience with Procore, Autodesk Build, BIM 360, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, or Microsoft Project.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
Experience supporting commissioning and startup activities.
Knowledge of BIM coordination and clash detection processes.
