Job Description
A client in the Columbus, OH area is seeking a Field Engineer for a leading concrete construction organization. This individual will serve as a critical member of the project team responsible for all line and grade layout activities on large-scale commercial and industrial construction projects. The Field Engineer will review construction drawings, create layout files, operate advanced surveying instruments such as Robotic Total Stations, and establish control points and elevations that drive project execution. This role offers significant exposure to the entire construction lifecycle, providing opportunities to develop technical expertise, gain a deep understanding of how projects are built, and advance into leadership positions such as Field Lead, Project Coordinator, or Project Leader. Ideal candidates will bring strong surveying and layout experience, self-perform concrete knowledge, and a passion for delivering precise, high-quality work in a collaborative field environment.
Day-to-Day:
- Review project blueprints, architectural drawings, and structural plans
- Create and prepare layout files using AutoCAD and surveying software
- Upload layout data into field data collectors
- Utilize Robotic Total Stations and surveying equipment to layout building elements
- Paint and mark footing locations
- Establish and maintain project control points and elevations
- Layout walls, foundations, embeds, anchor locations, and other critical project components
- Verify dimensions and resolve drawing discrepancies before execution
- Coordinate scheduling and sequencing activities with Project Leaders
- Provide accurate layout information to field crews for execution
- Monitor and maintain quality and precision throughout project lifecycle
- Serve as the technical resource for line and grade operations on the jobsite

Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years of field engineering, surveying, and layout experience (for senior-level candidates)
- Experience with Total Stations, Robotic Total Stations, and/or Theodolites
- Proficiency with surveying/data collection software
- Experience reading and interpreting architectural and structural drawings
- Commercial, Industrial, Self-Perform General Contractor, or Concrete Contractor background
- Knowledge of construction principles and practices on projects exceeding $1M
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
- Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Surveying, or related degree
- AutoCAD experience
- Experience mentoring junior field engineers or layout technicians
- Data center, manufacturing, educational, healthcare, or large industrial project experience
- Ability and desire to advance into Field Lead, Project Coordinator, or Project Leader roles
- Experience managing layout efforts across multiple projects
