Job Description
The Senior Clinical Terminology Specialist is responsible for maintaining and mapping standardized healthcare vocabularies to support semantic consistency and interoperability across data sources within the Health Information Exchange (HIE) environment. This role ensures that clinical data from multiple systems can be accurately interpreted and used for patient care, analytics, and reporting.
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Vocabulary Management:
o Maintain and update standardized healthcare terminologies and code sets used within the health information exchange.
o Ensure consistency in the representation of clinical concepts across systems.
o Monitor industry updates to terminology standards and incorporate changes as needed.
• Terminology Mapping:
o Map local codes from participating organizations to standardized concepts (e.g., SNOMED, LOINC, ICD, CPT, RxNorm).
o Review, validate, and update mappings to support accurate data integration and interoperability.
o Ensure semantic consistency and alignment across disparate data sources to support accurate exchange and integration.
o Conduct periodic audits to ensure the accuracy and completeness of vocabulary mappings.
• Interoperability Support
o Work closely with technical teams to lead data normalization efforts and to support semantic alignment across systems.
o Troubleshoot terminology-related data quality issues.
• Documentation & Collaboration
o Document procedures, mapping methodologies, decisions, and updates.
o Collaborate with clinical informatics, technical staff, and external data partners to ensure alignment with industry standards and best practices.

Required Skills & Experience
• 5+ years of experience working with clinical terminologies and coding systems such as SNOMED CT, LOINC, ICD, CPT, and RxNorm
• A strong understanding of health data exchange standards
• Familiarity with health data exchange standards and interoperability frameworks (e.g., HL7, FHIR)
• Strong attention to detail and analytical skills
• Experience working in a Health Information Exchange (HIE) or clinical informatics environment
• Knowledge of terminology management tools or platforms
• Understanding of clinical workflows and data use in healthcare settings
