Insight Global is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer specializing in Valve Design for a leading energy and nuclear technology client. This engineer will play a critical role in supporting advanced reactor programs and existing nuclear fleets by driving the design, development, and validation of complex mechanical components. The ideal candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams and external vendors to ensure high-quality, efficient designs that meet strict regulatory and performance requirements. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge small modular reactor (SMR) technology while contributing to meaningful advancements in clean energy solutions.
Day-to-Day:
• Design and develop mechanical components, with focus on valve systems
• Create and refine engineering design specifications and concepts
• Generate technical drawings and comprehensive design documentation
• Perform engineering calculations, modeling, and FEA analysis
• Collaborate with vendors and manufacturers on design, fabrication, and testing
• Support procurement efforts with technical expertise
• Provide oversight during component testing and validation
• Lead design reviews and present technical findings to stakeholders
• Coordinate across project managers, engineers, sourcing, and external partners
• Troubleshoot design or equipment issues and implement solutions
• Ensure compliance with regulatory, quality, and safety standards
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance

Required Skills & Experience
Must-Haves:
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
• 5+ years of experience in energy industry (nuclear strongly preferred) or similar technical field
• 2+ years working with customers, regulators, and suppliers
• Experience with mechanical component design and technical reviews
• Experience with ASME Section III Valve Design (minimum ~2 years)
• Knowledge of ASME/AWS codes and industry standards (e.g., BWRVIP)
• Strong experience with CAD tools (Autodesk Inventor preferred)
• Experience with ANSYS or similar FEA tools
• Ability to perform engineering calculations and modeling
• Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
• Must meet U.S. Export Control eligibility requirements
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Plusses:
• Prior nuclear experience (BWR, PWR, or SMR environments)
• Experience with BWR equipment or plant servicing equipment design
• Familiarity with fabrication processes (machining, welding, EDM)
• Knowledge of GD&T practices
• Experience with Inventor Vault or PLM systems
• Experience with lifting/rigging design and safety factor calculations
• Lean manufacturing experience
• Troubleshooting and root cause analysis experience
• Strong leadership and mentorship background
• Experience supporting procurement and fabrication teams
