Optum is looking for a remote Principal Data Scientist to join their Compliance and Privacy team to help design and develop job aids and guidance documentation for best practices of responsible AI use. This person would be responsible for providing mentorship and guidance to colleagues to foster a continuous learning and improvement.



Day to Day/Responsibilities:

Communication effectively with Legal, Compliance, AI/ML Engineering teams
Document findings, generate reports and present insights to stakeholders
Create job aids and guidance for responsible AI best practices
Develop Python scripts to automate testing and analyze AI system outputs
Identify and asses risks related to PII/PHI exposure in AI interactions
Maintain and improve test datasets and methodologies
Stay up to date with AI/ML research and apply relevant advancements
Mentor colleagues and promote continuous learning
Design and execute Red Team testing scenarios for conversational AI systems

Required Skills & Experience

Must Haves:

BS degree plus 5+ years equivalent experience in computer science, applied mathematics, applied statistics, or similar quantitative fields of study
5+ years of experience with the full ML system development, deployment, and maintenance lifecycle
5+ years of experience working with advanced NLP models and methodologies
5+ years of experience with python and ML frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, Pandas, Numpy)
Deep understanding of ethical considerations and fairness in AI model development
Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

Nice to Haves:

Experience working with healthcare systems including claims payments, call centers, or claims-based research
Proven ability to translate business needs and requirements into technical solutions
Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams including product managers, data scientists, and business stakeholders
Experience with large language models and adversarial testing methodologies
Exposure to regulatory frameworks relevant to AI in healthcare
Basic understanding of information security principles
