Job Description
The client is seeking a Structural Engineer Group Lead / Project Manager to support and grow its transportation structures practice in Maryland. This is a key leadership position reporting directly to the Structural Group Lead and serving as a second‑in‑command within the group. The position is looking for a strong technical leader and offers significant opportunity to grow and double the size of the team.
This role is designed for a go-getter who brings both strong technical credibility and the ability to leverage existing client relationships to generate new work. The successful candidate will help expand the group’s footprint across Maryland counties, guide business development strategy, mentor junior staff, and position the team to pursue and win transportation and infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Client Relationships
Leverage existing relationships within the Maryland transportation market to identify upcoming opportunities and generate new work.
Engage in intelligent, forward‑looking conversations with clients to understand future needs and position the team accordingly.
Collaborate with partner firms and subcontractors to pursue projects where strategic teaming provides the best chance to win.
Participate heavily in RFP identification, strategy, and preparation, providing technical input and scope development.
Project Leadership & Development
Serve as Senior or Lead Project Manager on transportation and structural projects, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget performance.
Provide technical oversight and guidance on bridge rehabilitation, new bridges, transit infrastructure, inspections, and related structures.
Review designs, calculations, and plans, providing mentorship and quality control for the team.
Support projects across Maryland with some collaboration in Virginia and surrounding states.
Team & Leadership Growth
Supervise and mentor junior engineers, typically overseeing 4–5 direct reports.
Help develop staff by identifying growth opportunities, project exposure, and career development paths.
Actively contribute to building and scaling the structural group, with a long‑term goal of doubling the team size.
Collaboration & Operations
Work closely with internal marketing, business development, and technical teams to pursue and deliver work.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders including engineering teams, business development, and marketing teams to develop and implement strategies for growth.
Support utilization goals, balancing project delivery with business development activities.
Participate in local travel for client meetings, site visits, and industry engagement as needed.
Represent the company at industry events, conferences and networking forums to enhance the company’s visibility within transportation & infrastructure.

Required Skills & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required (Master’s degree preferred).
Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
10–15+ years of progressive experience in structural engineering with a focus on transportation infrastructure.
Demonstrated experience working on DOT / state transportation projects, preferably in Maryland, Virginia, and/or DC.
Strong familiarity with the Maryland transportation market and established client relationships within the region.
Proven experience participating in and leading RFP pursuits, including scope development and technical input.
Background across a variety of structural projects including bridges, bridge rehabilitation, transit infrastructure, inspections, retaining walls, noise walls, and foundation design.
Experience with highway, transportation, and/or railroad and bridge projects.
Proficiency with MicroStation, with the ability to review, advise, and correct plans as needed.
Strong project management, leadership, and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to mentor and supervise junior engineers and grow a technical team.
Stable career history (preference for longer tenures rather than frequent job changes).
