Job Description

The Resident Engineer / Technician is responsible for overseeing and supporting transportation construction projects in the field, ensuring work is completed in accordance with plans, specifications, and applicable standards. This role serves as the primary on-site representative, coordinating between contractors, inspectors, and project stakeholders while maintaining quality, safety, and schedule compliance.

Responsibilities include:
• Provide on-site construction oversight for transportation projects (roads, highways, bridges, and utilities).
• Interpret and enforce project plans, specifications, and contract documents.
• Monitor contractor performance, schedule, and compliance with project requirements.
• Coordinate daily field activities with contractors, inspectors, and project managers.
• Review and approve material submittals, shop drawings, and change orders.
• Maintain accurate daily reports, project documentation, and quantity tracking.
• Ensure adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct field measurements, inspections, and quality assurance testing as needed.
• Identify and resolve field issues, including design conflicts and unforeseen conditions.
Assist with project closeout, including punch lists and final documentation.

Required Skills & Experience

• Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management
○ OR equivalent experience - 8-10 years of experience in construction inspection with a few years of experience as a resident engineer/tech
• 3-10+ years of experience in transportation construction inspection
○ Knowledge of roadway, bridge, and utility construction practices
○ Ability to read and interpret engineering plans
IDOT certs (materials testing, erosion control)
