Job Description
We are seeking a Director of Engineering to join our dynamic team at a large retailer. This is a high-impact leadership role with significant ownership in technical strategy, guidance, and team direction for our RV sales and retail development teams on the consumer-facing side. You will provide architectural oversight, technical direction, and mentorship across multiple engineering and QA pods while driving modernization of our customer-facing digital platforms. The role is primarily remote (anywhere in the US, with a preference for candidates near Chicago, IL) in a fast-paced, startup-like environment within a publicly traded company that rewards flexibility, autonomy, and strong leadership.
ROLE FOCUS
Primary focus on technical leadership, strategy, guidance, and mentorship (overseeing 3 direct reports: 2 Engineering Managers + 1 QA Manager, plus multiple pods across RV and Retail teams)
Fully self-sufficient director-level leader who can take high-level requirements, provide architectural direction and technical double-checking, mentor teams, and ensure end-to-end delivery of production-ready consumer experiences without heavy guidance
Focus on consumer-facing platforms using JavaScript, TypeScript, Next.js, and Salesforce Commerce Cloud (including major frontend migration initiatives); emphasis on oversight and guidance rather than heavy hands-on coding
All work supports greenfield development and platform modernization — no legacy maintenance. You will be guiding teams that build and enhance the platforms powering Camping World’s RV sales and retail operations.
60-80+ /hour depending on experience
