Job Description
You will be responsible for leading a team of 4 SQL Server + 2 Oracle/EBS DBAs (onshore/offshore) in a 50%+ hands-on role within a distributed enterprise environment (SQL 2012–2022, physical/virtual/cloud) supporting nationwide retail, e-commerce, POS, CRM, and ERP systems; spend the first 3-6 months diving deep into complex query optimization, performance tuning, escalations, troubleshooting, monitoring database health, implementing DR/backups, and collaborating with dev teams on database design—while establishing leadership through performance management, mentoring, and skill development; long-term, drive licensing consolidation and optimization to reduce costs, eliminate single-instance dependencies, enforce standards and best practices, ensure security and compliance, implement automation and tooling improvements (Dynatrace/Idera), support hybrid cloud migration planning, partner with the VP of IT Infrastructure on strategy, capacity planning, and technology roadmap, and maintain a sharp technical edge with no fade to management-only.
Pay Rate: 90-100/hr

Required Skills & Experience
• 10+ years of hands-on Microsoft SQL Server database administration experience
• 3+ years of leadership experience with ability to provide strategic direction while remaining technically proficient
• Expert-level knowledge of SQL Server 2012, 2016, 2019, and 2022 administration
• Extensive experience working with multiple SQL Server versions in complex enterprise environments
• Advanced T-SQL programming skills including stored procedures, functions, triggers, and query optimization
• Deep expertise in SQL Server performance tuning, execution plan analysis, and troubleshooting
• Strong understanding of disaster recovery and backup strategies (critical requirement)
• Experience with database security implementation and compliance requirements
• Proven ability to manage both onshore and offshore team members
• Experience in distributed, multi-location enterprise environments
• Strong problem-solving skills with ability to quickly diagnose and resolve complex database issues
• Excellent communication skills—able to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
• Self-starter who can “go with the flow but also be driven and provide direction and have opinions”
• Comfortable working in environments with legacy systems and technical debt
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
• Experience in retail, e-commerce, or multi-location operational environments
• Background supporting high-transaction systems (POS, inventory management, e-commerce platforms)
• Familiarity with Oracle databases (helpful but not required—understanding is a plus)
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure/AWS) and hybrid infrastructure
• Knowledge of database licensing optimization and consolidation strategies
• Experience with Dynatrace, Idera, Redgate, SolarWinds, or similar monitoring tools
• Proficiency with PowerShell scripting for automation
• Understanding of SSIS, SSRS, SSAS
• Microsoft SQL Server certifications (MCSA, MCSE, Azure Data certifications)
• Experience working in leaner IT organizations where you wear multiple hats
• Background in environments requiring minimal downtime for maintenance
