Job Description
This design system engineer role is a hands-on senior engineering role responsible for building and maintaining this global hotel company's enterprise Design System, which powers their .com site and supports dozens of brands. This role writes production-quality code daily and partners closely with design, accessibility, and product teams to scale brand experiences.
Key Responsibilities
Build and maintain a scalable Design System, including components, design tokens, documentation, and tooling
Write high-quality, semantic, accessible HTML and CSS (WCAG compliant)
Implement React components focused on DOM behavior, browser interactions, and reusability
Translate design concepts and external brand kits into scalable, production-ready code
Define and evolve component APIs and theming capabilities
Extend the component library into new areas (e.g., forms and advanced UI patterns)
Perform UI audits for accessibility, consistency, and performance
Debug and resolve front-end issues through testing and research
Build and maintain tooling (Storybook, linting, tests, build scripts)
Ensure Design System adoption and code quality across product teams
Brand & Platform Impact
Support frequent rebrands (currently 4–5, scaling to 10+ simultaneously)
Manage fonts, colors, styles, and themes across 35 core brands and nested brand families
This .com site is built on the Design System; updates directly impact site-wide UI
Collaboration & Team
Work on a 5-person Design System team with designers, a PM, and engineers
Partner closely with accessibility specialists and brand/design stakeholders
Required Expertise
Expert-level HTML/CSS with a strong portfolio of high-quality work
Strong React experience focused on UI infrastructure
Deep accessibility knowledge (WCAG required)
Experience building systems that scale across brands and platforms

Required Skills & Experience
- Someone who has built a custom design system from scratch, understanding of how themes in design systems work (theming of brands, multi theme design system where each brand has a different set of fonts).
- Significant experience developing valid, accessible, semantic HTML.
- Extensive CSS experience including modular CSS architecture.
- Strong experience with Design Tokens at scale.
- Deep React knowledge with emphasis on browser/DOM interactions.
- Strong awareness of browser compatibility issues.
- Knowledge of WCAG 2.x, ARIA, and accessibility best practices.
- Experience with modern front-end tooling (Vitest, Testing Library, Storybook).
- Experience with build tools including Vite, Webpack, Rollup.
- Strong component-based development experience.
- Experience defining Design System components and APIs.
- Figma expertise
- Larger enterprise environment working with multiple brands and theming
- Expert HTML, CSS, JS, React, and component architecture.
- Experience with design token tooling and scalable CSS strategies.
- Familiar with Storybook, Figma APIs, accessibility tooling, DevOps, and CI/CD.
