Job Description
A client of insight global is seeking a Geotechnical Laboratory Technical Director that will be responsible for leading all operations of an accredited soil testing laboratory based in Tucker, Georgia. This position oversees laboratory testing procedures, maintains equipment and accreditation standards, and ensures compliance with industry protocols. The director plays a hands-on role in supervising testing processes, training staff, implementing safety and quality measures, and serving as the primary point of contact for client technical inquiries, all within a collaborative and on-site work environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Oversee all laboratory operations including personnel management, scheduling, equipment maintenance and calibration, and resource allocation.
• Supervise a range of geotechnical and construction materials testing, including but not limited to: Proctor, Atterberg Limits, grain size analysis, unconfined compression, CU and UU triaxial, Direct Shear, permeability, consolidation, and CBR.
• Ensure compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, GDOT, and internal QMS procedures.
• Maintain accreditation and certification standards, including participation in AASHTO proficiency testing.
• Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as ability to learn new software quickly and effectively.
• Knowledge of QuickBooks for generating invoices is highly desirable
• Provide training and performance evaluations for laboratory staff.
• Develop and enforce laboratory safety protocols and quality assurance standards.
• Strictly follow QA/QC manual/requirements, approved by federal agencies
• Interface with clients and provide technical guidance as needed.
• Prepare for and lead internal and external audits, manage calibration schedules, and oversee maintenance of laboratory instruments.
• Focus on teamwork, high quality, and excellent customer service
• Develop relationships with key clients and serve as their primary point of contact to answer their technical questions regarding project specifications
• Oversee proficiency sample program (PSP) and perform corrective actions, if needed
• Prepare and review detailed laboratory test reports for accuracy and completeness utilizing in-house developed software.
• Keep client database and house-developed software and reports in confidence

Required Skills & Experience
Qualifications
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in geotechnical and materials testing laboratories, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.

• Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred; Civil Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related STEM field is also acceptable with professional license(s)
• P.E. is preferred, and P.G. license is acceptable based on experience.
• Certification in NICET, ACI, or other state/national/regional authority or equivalent is highly desirable.
• Strong knowledge of laboratory standards, including ASTM, AASHTO, USACE, and GDOT procedures.
Excellent organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
