Job Description

A large utilities client is looking for a Director of Tax to join their organization. Hybrid with periodic travel, residing in DE, PA, MD, FL, OH, VA, NC or GA.

What youll be working on

- Leading the interim and annual income tax accounting process to ensure accurate and timely reporting. Responsibilities include preparing, reviewing, and documenting supporting calculations and income tax accounting positions as well as executing internal control reviews.
- Leading the income tax compliance function to ensure accurate and timely reporting. Responsibilities include preparing and reviewing Federal and state income tax calculations, income tax returns, extensions and estimated tax payments, as well as researching and documenting income tax positions. Responsibilities also include responding to notices from taxing authorities.
- Supporting the regulatory filing and forecasting process to ensure accurate and timely reporting. Responsibilities include preparing and reviewing tax related details supporting rate case filings and projected income tax obligations as well as scenario modeling.
- Independently researching and concluding on various complex tax issues to determine the appropriate tax treatment and related reporting. Research includes preparing written memorandums for review and technical presentations to the leadership team. Investigating, concluding, and responding to inquiries regarding tax matters made by organizations within Chesapeake.
- Analyzing and interpreting changes to federal and state tax laws as well as communicating financial impact of changes. Assisting in controversial matters with governmental agencies including but not limited to the Internal Revenue Service, regulatory agencies, and other state taxing authorities. Activities include assisting in formulating position statements with respect to identified controversies raised by authorities.
- Mentoring and developing staff including providing feedback and direction on assignments and projects with a focus on the Chesapeakes core competencies and values.
- Proactively identifying, driving, and implementing process improvements that promote risk management, streamline activities, and enhance transparency in tax work streams. Participating in project planning and support special projects.
- Overseeing Federal and State corporate income tax, sales and use tax and property tax, in addition to other tax related issues.
- Supervising three direct reports and also manages third party consultant relationships associated with Chesapeakes tax compliance process.

Required Skills & Experience

- Ten years or more of professional corporate tax experience focusing n publicly traded companies, including a combination of industry and either public accounting or law firms.
- Ability to perform legal and tax research.
- Good working knowledge of all major areas of federal and state corporate tax law.
- Proficient analytical ability to resolve complex technical issues.
- Proficient technical skills, including MS Office products and related tax systems.
- Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Tax.
- Experience with PowerPlan's PowerTax, Onesource, or ERP systems, etc (implementation experience)

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

- SAP experience
- Preferably have five years or more of professional tax experience focusing on publicly traded utility companies.
- Preferably a CPA or hold another financial certification and/or an advanced degree (JD or MST or LLM).
