Job Description
The client is seeking a Firewall Engineer with a primary focus on Juniper firewalls to support day-to-day firewall access and policy requests. This role sits within a network security team responsible for maintaining secure, reliable connectivity across enterprise environments. The work is heavily ticket-driven, with an initial focus on firewall access requests and gradual ramp-up into more complex troubleshooting and incident support.
This role is well-suited for someone who is motivated, patient, eager to learn the environment, and strong with firewall fundamentals. While the client’s specific processes will be learned on the job, a solid understanding of firewall behavior and traffic inspection is critical.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Review and fulfill firewall access request tickets, primarily involving Juniper firewalls
Implement and update firewall access policies to allow secure communication between devices and applications
Analyze ticket requirements to determine whether traffic should be permitted or denied based on policy
Validate firewall rules against security standards and customer requirements
Support request tickets as the primary workload, with exposure to incident and troubleshooting tickets over time
Troubleshoot connectivity and latency-related issues tied to firewall rules and network behavior
Gain familiarity with the customer environment and gradually take on more complex requests
Collaborate with network and security teams to ensure stable and performant traffic flow
Document firewall changes and updates as required by process

Required Skills & Experience
Hands-on experience working with Juniper firewalls (policy creation, modification, and troubleshooting)
Strong understanding of firewall concepts and traffic inspection, including how firewalls evaluate and control traffic
Experience working from a ticketing system, handling firewall access or connectivity requests
Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, including:
IP-based networking (Layer 3 focus)
Routing concepts and packet flow
How latency can be introduced or impacted by firewall policies
Knowledge of the OSI model, particularly how firewalls operate across network layers
Ability to interpret and apply access policies to meet security and business needs
Comfortable working in a structured, controlled environment with a steady ramp-up period
Strong communication skills and a collaborative, motivated mindset
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Cisco firewall experience
Firewall or network certifications (helpful for more junior candidates but not required)
Broader network engineering background (routers, switches, enterprise networks)
Experience supporting enterprise-scale environments
