Job Description

The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for analyzing loan applications to determine creditworthiness, assess risk, and ensure the loan meets all necessary requirements for approval. This includes reviewing financial documentation, evaluating property appraisals, and making sound lending decisions.

Responsibilities:

Thoroughly review and analyze loan applications, including credit reports, income documentation, asset statements, and property appraisals.
Assess the borrower's creditworthiness, repayment ability, and overall financial stability.
Evaluate the collateral value of the property and ensure it meets loan-to-value requirements.
Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with each loan application.
Ensure loan files are complete and accurate, adhering to all regulatory guidelines (e.g., RESPA, TILA) and company policies.
Communicate effectively with loan officers, processors, and other stakeholders regarding loan status and underwriting decisions.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current mortgage lending practices, regulations, and guidelines.
Make sound lending decisions within established authority limits.
Document all underwriting findings and decisions clearly and concisely.
Meet established production and quality metrics.
Contribute to process improvements and identify areas for increased efficiency.

Required Skills & Experience

5-10+ years of mortgage underwriting experience
Strong knowledge of mortgage lending products, underwriting guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
Recent experience in Encompass or similar system
Experience dealing with various investor guidelines
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Ability to interpret complex financial information and assess risk.
