Job Description

An SPD Tech (Sterile Processing Technician) is a critical behind-the-scenes healthcare role responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, and managing the medical tools and instruments used in patient care—especially in surgeries.
1. Decontamination (Cleaning)
Receives used surgical instruments from operating rooms or clinics
Cleans them thoroughly using:
Manual scrubbing
Ultrasonic cleaners
Washer-disinfectors
Removes blood, tissue, and contaminants to prevent infection
2. Inspection & Assembly
Inspects instruments for:
Cleanliness
Damage or wear
Assembles instrument trays/kits based on surgical procedure requirements
Ensures every set has the correct tools
3. Sterilization
Uses sterilization equipment such as:
Steam autoclaves
Low-temperature sterilizers (for sensitive equipment)
Follows strict protocols to eliminate bacteria, viruses, and spores
4. Packaging & Storage
Wraps or packages instruments in sterile materials
Labels them with expiration dates and tracking info
Stores them properly to maintain sterility
5. Distribution
Delivers sterile instruments to:
Operating rooms
Emergency departments
Clinics
Often works on tight timelines to support surgeries
6. Documentation & Compliance
Tracks sterilization cycles and instrument usage
Follows regulations (CDC, AAMI, Joint Commission standards)
Maintains quality control and safety records
