Job Description

The Plumbing Engineer is responsible for the design, analysis, and development of plumbing systems throughout all phases of project delivery. Working with increasing independence, this role prepares plumbing drawings, specifications, calculations, hydraulic analyses, and technical documentation while applying engineering principles, applicable plumbing codes, and industry best practices.
The Plumbing Engineer collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop coordinated, efficient, and constructible plumbing solutions for commercial and institutional facilities. This position supports construction administration, contributes to technical coordination, and actively develops engineering expertise through continuous learning and professional growth.
Typical Responsibilities
• Develop plumbing engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, hydraulic analyses, and technical documentation throughout all phases of project delivery.
• Design domestic water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, natural gas, medical gas, specialty piping, and other plumbing systems in accordance with applicable codes and engineering standards.
• Perform engineering calculations including fixture unit analyses, water supply sizing, sanitary and storm drainage sizing, hydraulic calculations, gas piping sizing, pressure loss analyses, and equipment selection under the guidance of senior engineers when appropriate.
• Prepare coordinated construction documents, piping layouts, riser diagrams, equipment schedules, and supporting design documentation.
• Utilize CAD and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to develop and coordinate accurate 2D drawings and 3D plumbing models.
• Collaborate with architects, structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and civil teams to deliver coordinated and constructible plumbing system designs.
• Support construction administration by reviewing shop drawings and submittals, responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), participating in site visits, and assisting with field coordination.
• Participate in project coordination meetings to communicate design progress, resolve technical issues, and support successful project execution.
• Maintain organized engineering documentation and contribute to quality reviews, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Engage in ongoing professional development to expand technical expertise in plumbing engineering, water conservation strategies, sustainable water management, and evolving plumbing technologies.

NOTE: This role will sit in Austin TX, or Phoenix, AZ. Potential for 10% travel, otherwise remote, or in a company office location.

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience) required.
• 4+ years of experience designing plumbing systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, industrial, or mission-critical facilities required.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• Active NCEES Record for licensure maintenance preferred.
• Demonstrated experience designing domestic water, sanitary, storm drainage, natural gas, medical gas, specialty piping, and related plumbing systems.
• Strong understanding of the International Plumbing Code (IPC), Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), applicable NFPA standards, and local plumbing and building codes.
• Proficiency with plumbing engineering calculations, CAD and BIM platforms, and industry-standard engineering design tools.
• Strong knowledge of construction documentation, multidisciplinary coordination, and construction administration practices.
• Excellent analytical, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities while working effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
