The Naval Architect is responsible for carrying out naval architecture assignments on new construction and repair projects at a large Vancouver Shipyard. Under the direction of the Manager, Naval Architecture, the Senior Engineer, Naval Architecture, participates in all phases of new construction design projects, including requirements decomposition, design preparations, supporting analysis, material selection and specification, engineering execution, and engineering close-out activities
What You'll Do:
• Provides engineering and design expertise in assigned areas of Naval Architecture by preparing and reviewing design and calculation packages to ensure contract design requirements are met.
• Provides engineering and design expertise in assigned areas of structural design by preparing and reviewing design and calculation packages to ensure contract design requirements are met.
• Supports the Manager, Naval Architecture, by providing mentorship and oversight to other junior engineers, designers, or subcontractors in the areas of naval architecture and structural design.
• Develops and/or reviews design documents for fisheries, icebreaking, and naval replenishment vessels to achieve customer, Classification Society, and regulatory approval.
• Performs trade studies, both formal and informal, to identify the most cost-effective solutions to engineering problems and stay within material budgets for assigned systems. Looks for opportunities to lower material costs below the budget.
• Develops material specifications and bills of material in accordance with Seaspan material strategies and customer requirements.
• Represents the company to the industry to develop an understanding of Seaspan’s involvement in FFR and continue to build our reputation.

Required Skills & Experience
• 10+ years of post secondary experience in naval architecture and structural design
• Extensive technical expertise in naval architecture, including stability and weight calculations, resistance and powering, seakeeping, structural design (connections and production best practices), noise prediction and attenuation, and icebreaker structures.
• Experience with a range of vessel types—such as research vessels, fishing vessels, icebreakers
- Experience with Engineering stamping: Stability, probabilistic Damage (this isneeded for all CCG and Future Projects)
• Strong technical communication skills, including clear technical writing, reporting, and presentations, as well as effective verbal and interpersonal communication.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, document control systems, databases, and Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
• Strong organizational skills, a commitment to safety and compliance with all safety policies, and the ability to exercise sound discretion in decision making.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex technical problems, supported by above average analytical skills and sound engineering judgment.
- Reliability and CGP cleared with eligibility for Nato Secret Clearance
• Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture
• Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation in British Columbia
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
• Experience / strong understanding of ShipConstructor
• Experience with naval auxiliary vessels is a strong asset.
• Familiarity with MRP, purchasing, and management systems
• Previous shipyard experience and experience working with diverse, multidisciplinary project teams are considered assets.
