Job Description

The Assistant Controller is a senior finance leadership position responsible for overseeing institutional and capital project reporting, research financial management, audits, tax compliance, and financial systems within a post-secondary environment. Acting as a strategic advisor to the Controller, this role ensures financial transparency, compliance, and process efficiency while driving system enhancements. The position requires deep knowledge of complex financial streams, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to design robust processes balancing internal controls with operational effectiveness. Leading a team of seven, including analysts and managers, the Assistant Controller plays a key role in supporting organizational financial integrity and may step in for the Controller as needed.

Required Skills & Experience

Professional accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) and membership in good standing, combined with a relevant degree.

5–7 years of progressive experience in finance/accounting within a large, complex, multi-fund environment (preferably public sector).

Strong knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards and related regulations (including GST, PST, MRDT, and CRA charity guidelines).

Proven leadership ability to manage and develop a team of finance professionals and foster a collaborative environment.

Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience in financial systems, complex data analysis, and process improvement.
