Job Description
The HVAC Technician performs journey‑level commercial and industrial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work, including installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of HVAC systems and related equipment. This role supports City‑owned facilities, parks, and recreational buildings and works independently from assigned work orders while complying with all applicable codes, safety standards, and regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Diagnose, repair, maintain, and install commercial and industrial HVAC systems, including air handling equipment, chilled and hot water systems, and light/heavy commercial DX equipment
Perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting on air handlers, boilers, chillers, pumps, fans, compressors, motors, bearings, ductwork, insulation, and refrigeration circuits
Work with air moving and control equipment including VAVs, VVTs, constant volume boxes, FPBs, ERUs, ERVs, VFDs, ECM motors, and direct digital controls (DDC)
Operate, repair, calibrate, and modify building automation and DDC systems controlling HVAC equipment and components
Perform electrical and mechanical repairs on mini‑split, VRF/VRV, CRAC, and PTAC systems
Repair related appliances and equipment such as refrigerators, ice machines, ovens, dishwashers, washers/dryers, range hoods, and air scrubbers
Communicate and coordinate with City departments, contractors, vendors, and the public during service activities
Complete job documentation accurately and daily using computers or smart devices
Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas; protect facilities from damage during work activities
Assist with field training and provide technical guidance to team members as needed
Participate in on‑call emergency rotation and support renovations or construction projects as required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong knowledge of commercial and industrial HVAC, refrigeration, and air distribution systems
Working knowledge of air handlers, air moving equipment, VAVs, VVTs, constant volume boxes, FPBs, ERUs, ERVs, VFDs, and ECM motors
Ability to operate and troubleshoot commercial/industrial HVAC systems, chilled/hot water systems, and DX equipment
Proficiency with DDC and building automation systems, electrical troubleshooting, and control schematics
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, control drawings, and psychrometric charts
Skilled in the use of HVAC tools, testing equipment, and machinery; welding ability preferred
Strong communication, customer service, and teamwork skills
Ability to perform heavy manual labor and work safely in challenging environments

Required Skills & Experience
High school diploma or GED; technical or vocational training preferred
Minimum 4 years of experience as a journeyman HVAC technician in commercial and/or industrial settings
Journeyman‑level HVAC certification
Valid driver’s license
Ability to obtain CDL Class B endorsement within required timeframe
EPA‑approved refrigerant (Freon) certification may be required
