Job Description
Work in cross-functional teams with multiple engineering disciplines (optical, mechanical, electrical, metrology and test, etc.) to design and build experimental setups and engineering prototypes. Dynamic opto-mechanical engineer to contribute to various project needs: Opto-mechanical CAD designs and trade studies, lab scale experimentation, Component and sub-system Reliability (REL) testing, Mechanical and Optical Metrology. Guidance and direction to be provided by optomechanical engineer(s) and research scientists.
Required Skills & Experience
Strong mechanical design skills for components and assemblies
Basic optical design skills for free space optical systems
Assembly and prototyping skills for large lab setups and form factor prototypes
Understanding of Reliability(REL) test methods for drop shock and thermal testing of optical components and subsystems
Understanding of optical metrology equipment, fixturing, precision alignment Understanding of mechanical engineering principles of statics and dynamics, stress/strain and their effects on optical component performance
Understanding of thermal engineering principles and modes of heat transfer and their effects on optical component performance
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Ability to construct and maintain complex CAD models of optical and mechanical systems.
Ability to model and optimize simple optical systems.
Ability to own the full prototype loop of design, fabricate, build, and test.
Self-starter, motivated, chases down details and follows up and follows through.
Actively seeks out answers when stuck, doesn't wait on the team.
Able to work with limited inputs and can handle ambiguity, make decisions.
General curiosity and willingness to learn.

Experience level: >5 years work experience.
Knowledge
Design for prototype manufacturing processes such as 3D printing, milling, and turning.
Solidworks mechanical CAD experience preferred Zemax or Code V optical CAD experience preferred
Familiarity with lab processes and equipment such as lasers
General familiarity with standard optical and optomechanical components (lenses, mirrors, mounts, stages, cameras, etc.) as well as the major suppliers (Thorlabs, Edmund Optics, Newport, McMaster, Digikey, etc.)
Familiarity with mechanical and optical metrology and test equipment (Instron, Interferometer, microscopes, etc).
