Senior Automotive Technician (Contract-to-Perm)
Location: Richmond, VA & Ashland, VA
Pay: $25/hour + overtime
Schedule: Monday–Friday | Traditional Day Shift (Half-Day Fridays)
Type: 6-month Contract-to-Perm

Role Overview
Afton Chemical is seeking a Senior Automotive Technician to support engine testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance activities within their R&D labs. This individual will leverage their deep automotive and engine experience to ensure testing equipment operates efficiently and accurately while supporting the development and validation of petroleum additive technologies.
Responsibilities

Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair gasoline and diesel engines used in testing environments
Perform engine tear-downs, inspections, rebuilds, and reassembly
Set up and configure engine test programs and support testing operations
Monitor engine performance and record operational data
Identify mechanical issues and implement corrective actions
Perform preventative maintenance on test equipment and engines
Assist engineers with modifications, testing, and data collection
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
Participate in daily safety and planning meetings

Time Breakdown

50% Engine diagnostics, repair, and maintenance
30% Engine testing and data collection
20% Engine teardown, rebuilds, and test preparation

Training & Schedule

Initial training conducted across Richmond and Ashland facilities as needed
Standard Monday-Friday schedule
Half-day Fridays

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications

2-3+ years of hands-on automotive technician experience
Strong engine diagnostics, repair, rebuild, and troubleshooting experience
Experience working on gasoline and/or diesel engines
High school diploma or GED
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
Ability to pass a 7-year background check
Ability to pass a 5-panel drug screen (including THC)

NICE TO HAVE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ASE Certifications
Experience with engine dynamometers or performance testing
Experience working in an R&D, manufacturing, or industrial environment
Diesel engine experience
Familiarity with electronic diagnostic tools and software
Welding or fabrication experience

Required Skills & Experience
