Job Description
Fluence Energy is seeking an Energy Storage Commissioning Engineer to support the delivery and commissioning of utility-scale battery energy storage systems across the United States. This role is heavily field-based with full-time travel and ownership of commissioning activities from planning through commercial operation. The ideal candidate brings strong electrical commissioning experience, excels in fast-paced project environments, and is eager to convert into a long-term role with a global market leader in energy storage solutions.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
• Commission large-scale battery energy storage projects across the U.S.
• Develop, execute, and manage commissioning plans, schedules, and resources
• Lead commissioning and acceptance testing for:
○ Control systems, communications, and networks
○ Balance-of-plant systems (electrical, HVAC, fire suppression, relay protection)
○ Battery and inverter subsystems
• Coordinate with construction managers, contractors, automation teams, and suppliers
• Oversee transition from construction/delivery to Operations & Maintenance teams
• Manage multiple overlapping projects and resolve scheduling or resource conflicts
Ensure commissioning activities meet safety, quality, utility, and contractual standards

Required Skills & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field OR 3–5 years of relevant professional experience
• Experience in utility-scale commissioning, industrial construction, project delivery, or performance testing
• Hands-on experience with electrical systems, equipment testing, troubleshooting, startup/shutdowns, and commissioning
• Willing and able to travel extensively (>90%), including weekends and holidays
• Ability to provide remote technical support to commissioning teams
• Experience managing multiple projects and coordinating with cross-functional stakeholders
• Strong communication skills with internal teams, contractors, and external partners
• Preferred experience:
○ Utility-scale or electric power industry background
○ SCADA protocols (IEC 61850, IEC 60870, DNP3, Modbus)
○ PLCs (Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley ControlLogix), SEL relays and meters
○ High-voltage electrical equipment (inverters, transformers, controllers)
Managed Ethernet switches, fiber/serial communications
