Job Description

The Contracts Officer is responsible for drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide range of sponsored research and project-related agreements with external partners, including industry, state and federal government agencies, foundations, and nonprofit organizations. This role supports faculty in securing and managing extramural funding, ensures institutional compliance with legal, ethical, and financial requirements, and strengthens the organization's partnerships with sponsors. The position also leads sponsored project activity reporting and serves as a key campus resource for sponsored contracts administration.

Day to Day:
Draft, review, interpret, and negotiate sponsored agreements in support of organization-sponsored projects.

Assist faculty and staff with preparation of contract proposals.

Review and interpret sponsor policies, rules, and regulations.

Conduct pre-negotiation fact-finding to support efficient and effective negotiations.

Track and manage agreement workflows through execution and signature.

Ensure all contracts meet organization legal, ethical, and financial standards.

Establish and maintain systems for reviewing active agreements and multi-year gift agreements to ensure compliance, including required reporting.

Collect, analyze, and report data and metrics related to sponsored project contracting and management.

Prepare and submit reports, compile tracking documentation, and support ongoing stewardship activities.

Respond to faculty, staff, and sponsor inquiries related to sponsored contracts.

Utilize the organizations information systems to track contracts throughout the project lifecycle.

Record sponsored project, contract, and award data in financial and compliance systems.

Ensure the organization practices align with current state and federal regulations and provide training and updates to faculty, leadership, and research administration professionals.

This role is offering $60-80k per year.

Required Skills & Experience

Bachelor’s degree
Strong legal background or adjacent experience
Experience working with federal or private funding agencies on grants, contracts, or other agreements.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and efficiently in high-pressure environments.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship management skills.
Experience with negotiating, issue identification, risk mitigation, contract drafting (etc.) (typically comes from people with some legal background)
