Job Description

Insight Global is seeking an Application Engineer for a top Building Automation/Controls client. This candidate will be responsible for designing, programming, and supporting building automation systems for commercial construction, retrofit, and service projects. The engineer will translate project plans, specifications, and sequences of operation into complete controls designs, network architectures, DDC databases, programming, and commissioning documentation. This individual will work closely with sales, project management, field technicians, contractors, and customers to deliver high-quality automation solutions, while serving as a technical subject matter expert throughout the project lifecycle. The ideal candidate has strong HVAC controls knowledge, hands-on BAS programming experience, and a passion for solving complex building automation challenges.


Day-to-Day:
Review project specifications received from the sales team and design building automation systems
Develop controls solutions and select products that provide the most cost-effective implementation
Serve as a technical resource for internal teams and customers
Participate in sales-to-operations turnover meetings to validate estimates and job layouts
Support site walkthroughs with contractors and building management teams
Program building automation systems for new construction, retrofit, and service projects
Design custom control solutions to meet unique project requirements
Develop DDC point databases and controller programming
Design BAS network architectures including workstations, DDC panels, and third-party integrations
Support integration using BACnet, LON, Ethernet, and other communication protocols
Create startup, commissioning, and checkout documentation
Oversee workstation builds and graphical user interface development
Assist with field activities, commissioning, and project support as needed

Required Skills & Experience

3+ years of experience in building automation, HVAC controls, mechanical design, electrical controls, or application engineering
Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC equipment, controls devices, sequences of operation, and networked building systems
Ability to read and interpret mechanical/electrical plans, wiring diagrams, specifications, and equipment submittals
Experience programming building automation systems (BAS/DDC)
Knowledge of building automation network architectures and protocols
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and controls design, estimating, drafting, or submittal software
Strong technical writing, organizational, collaboration, and problem-solving skill

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, or Architectural Engineering Technology
Experience with BACnet, Niagara, Tridium, Honeywell, Distech, Johnson Controls, Siemens, PLCs, or similar platforms
Experience with Visio, Bluebeam, or controls estimating tools
Manufacturer certifications, networking certifications, cybersecurity credentials, or engineering certifications
Experience with retrofit, renovation, and large-scale commercial building automation projects
