Job Description

The BI Developer is a high-output Power BI report builder who turns business questions into polished, fast, and easy-to-use reports. You will work from approved semantic models and curated datasets, partner closely with Data Engineering to ensure the right data is available, gather requirements directly from stakeholders, and deliver production-ready reports at a high velocity. This role is design-forward: you will be expected to produce consistently excellent visuals that follow DSI reporting standards and are ready to be used by executives and field teams.

· Ship multiple production reports each week that follow DSI design guidelines and meet performance expectations.

· Develop a repeatable workflow for requirement intake -> wireframe -> build -> review -> publish -> iterate.

· Build strong working habits with the Data Engineer: clear data requests, validation checks, and quick turnaround on model adjustments.

· Establish trust with stakeholders through responsive communication, clean documentation, and dependable delivery.

Primary Responsibilities

1) High-Velocity Power BI Report Delivery (Primary Focus)

· Build and publish Power BI reports and dashboards from existing datasets/semantic models, with an emphasis on speed and quality.

· Apply DSI design guidelines consistently (layout, typography, color usage, spacing, interaction patterns, and accessibility).

· Create clear, reusable report templates and components to accelerate delivery and maintain consistency.

· Implement user-friendly navigation, drill-through, tooltips, and storytelling patterns that make insights obvious.

· Own end-to-end report QA: filters, slicers, totals, drill paths, security behavior, and edge cases.

2) Requirements Gathering and Iteration

· Lead fast, structured intake with stakeholders to understand goals, decisions, and the “so what” behind requests.

· Translate needs into a short requirements brief (measures needed, visuals, audience, grain, refresh cadence).

· Prototype quickly (wireframe or draft build), review early with users, and iterate in short feedback cycles.

· Prioritize requests with the manager and stakeholders to maintain a reliable delivery pipeline.

3) Data Collaboration and Validation

· Partner with the Data Engineer to request new fields, measures, relationships, or curated tables when gaps are discovered.

· Validate data accuracy using basic SQL, spot checks, and reconciliation to source systems when needed.

· Create and maintain business-friendly metric definitions (what the measure means, how it is calculated, and any caveats).

4) Performance and Usability

· Build reports that feel fast: lean visuals, efficient interactions, and clean measure usage.

· Use DAX and model best practices to avoid common performance traps (excessive visuals, heavy iterators, poorly designed slicers).

· Work with the Data Engineer to resolve performance issues in measures/models when required.

5) Documentation and Support

· Maintain lightweight documentation for each deliverable: purpose, audience, data source, refresh cadence, and key measures.

· Support post-deployment enhancements and bug fixes while keeping production reports stable and trustworthy.

· When requested, help create or update simple diagrams (Visio or equivalent) that explain report/data dependencies.

· Working knowledge of Power Query (M) for light transformations and troubleshooting.

· Basic SQL skills to validate data and investigate issues.

· Proven ability to deliver quickly without sacrificing quality; thrives in a fast feedback loop.

· Excellent communication: can run requirement sessions and translate business needs into a build plan.

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

· Experience with ERP, accounting, job costing, payroll, or construction operations data.

· Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse/Warehouse, semantic models) and dataset governance concepts.
