Job Description

A midstream oil and gas company in Houston, TX, is looking for a Metallurgical Engineer to join their team. This individuals job will be to provide metallurgical, materials and welding engineering support to all business units within Kinder Morgan (Natural Gas, Products, CO2 and Terminals). The successful candidate will work with various departments (Operations, PM, Engineering, Integrity, Procurement, etc.) to ensure the integrity and safe operations of KM facilities. When any equipment failure or pipeline failure occur, this team gets involved. They do the forensics and investigate to determine what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Coordinate and conduct failure analysis projects at third party metallurgy labs

* Conduct field site investigations of pipeline or station/plant incidents

* Perform WPS/PQR reviews for capital and O&M projects (welding needs from the field, this team provides that)

* Support Procurement department regarding purchase of pipeline and facility components

* Support Project Management -- proficient in addressing pipeline and facility/plant projects from a material and welding perspective (get involved in capital projects, coordinate pipeline activities, pipeline integrity, operations, etc.)

* Participate in design reviews for pipeline systems, pipeline assemblies and compressor & pump stations

* Audit pipe mills, fabrication shops, valve manufacturers, etc. (Audit facilities)

* Coordinate PMI destructive and non-destructive testing projects

* Support LNG facilities and terminals with respect to material issues and welding matters (ensuring they are using the correct products)

* Provide in-line inspection (ILI) anomaly repair guidance per Company procedures and industry standards (called "smart pigs" -- they are instruments that go into pipeline to clean it, remove accumulated liquids, etc. When the tool went down the pipeline, it made a squealing sound, so that is why they call it "pigs") (The Metallurgical Engineers engage with the field operators / integrity team when the smart pigs detected an issue in the pipeline)

* Revise Company O&M Procedures and Engineering Standards related to materials, welding, and non-destructive testing methods

Required Skills & Experience

-Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science Engineering. Minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in closely related field. HAS TO BE.

-5 plus years of pipeline industry & related facilities experience (energy industry experience on the pipeline side)

-Coming from following industries: energy or chemical or refinery

-Proficient in Pipeline & Facility Industry Standards, i.e., including but not limited to API, ASME, ANSI, MSS SP, AWS

-Knowledge of DOT/PHMSA regulations 49 CFR Part 192 and Part 195 (Regulations they must be familiar with)

-Welding engineering experience with a focus on welding procedure specifications (WPS) and procedure qualification records (PQR) review per API 1104 and ASME Section IX

-Design knowledge of pipeline systems per ASME B31.8, B31.4, B31.3, & B31.1

-Has conducted instrument in-line inspections of the pipelines (Knowledge of In-Line Inspection tools and anomaly repair methods for pipeline systems)

-Procurement experience with pipe, valve, fittings and other pipeline accessories including compressor stations, pump stations, terminals and chemical processing plants

-API Q1 auditing knowledge, and experience with conducting and coordinating manufacturer and shop audits (auditing capabilities)

-Proficient in conducting failure analysis work to include field investigations and metallurgy lab projects

-Proficient in Positive Material Identification (PMI) tools and techniques for material verifications

-Knowledge of fitness-for-service evaluations per API 579-1/ASME FFS -- 1 or similar industry standards

-Proficient in computer software applications including Microsoft Office
