Job Description

This position reports to the Director, Accounting and plays a lead role in ensuring that the analysis and accounting necessary to maintain the financial statements and accounting records is completed accurately and efficiently. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the General Accounting department and reporting financial results on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. They work with their team on complex accounting topics including intercompany transactions, debt, investments, workers compensation / general liability insurance, lease accounting, legal accruals, revenue allocations, franchise reporting, ad hoc reports analysis of general ledger accounts, reconciliations, and special projects. Reporting to this position are a staff and senior accountant.

The position requires excellent written and verbal communication with members of the finance and accounting team and other business functions to understand and document the business dynamics that are reflected in the accounting results. The position requires strong technical GAAP accounting skills, external financial statement report writing, and position paper crafting for technical interpretations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

* Supervise day-to-day activities of the corporate accounting department, and all related systems and processes, to ensure compliance with US GAAP and internal control procedures

* Lead month-end close process including analysis of financial statements (actual vs. budget, actual vs. prior periods, trend analysis)

* Communicate results to Leadership and convert accounting terms to understandable business explanations both written and verbally

* Maintain general ledger accounts by posting, verifying, and resolving discrepancies

* Understand and prepare intercompany and consolidating accounting schedules

* Assist accounting staff in developing processes and procedures for complex accounting transactions

* Produce quarterly and annual financial statements in coordination with the Manager, Technical Accounting

* Co-manage the annual audit including preparation of documentation and responses to auditor inquiries

* Research GAAP concepts and apply them to operational accounting

* Write GAAP position papers and coordinate with external auditors

* Identify control weaknesses around accounting process and develop proposals for appropriate remediation

* Identify and implement process improvement and make the necessary communications

* Read and understand actuarial estimates and prepare recommendations

* Lead analytical projects with other departments and prepare complex accounting/financial reports and schedules including analysis of historical data/trends and projection of future outcomes

Job Requirements:

* Ability to maintain attention and concentration for extended periods of time.

Required Skills & Experience

CPA required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent from an accredited university

7+ years of accounting experience

2+ years of management or supervisory experience

3+ years of GAAP financial report preparation

Prior experience writing position papers for US GAAP

Public accounting experience preferred

Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and application of best practices

Proficient in Microsoft Office and other productivity software including advanced skills with Microsoft Excel

Due to financial reporting requirements and deadlines must be available for certain holidays or weekends
