Job Overview
The z/OS Systems Engineer is responsible for day-to-day production support and engineering of mainframe systems, as well as project-related activities. This role ensures stability, performance, and security of z/OS environments while collaborating with managed service vendors across engineering, operations, and application support. Responsibilities include managing operating systems, hardware, and software; integrating with distributed/cloud platforms; and performing performance tuning, capacity planning, and disaster recovery testing.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
• Install, configure, and maintain z/OS and related software components.
• Monitor system performance, conduct capacity planning, and optimize for efficiency.
• Implement and manage security measures (RACF/Top Secret).
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex mainframe issues.
• Collaborate with vendors and internal teams for integration and performance analysis.
• Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing.
• Develop automation scripts using REXX, Python, and tools like Ansible.
• Document configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guidelines.
• Support application developers in optimizing mainframe applications.
• Occasionally work outside normal business hours for critical tasks.
Key Responsibilities
• Maintain and improve mainframe stability and security.
• Lead integration efforts between mainframe and distributed/cloud systems.
• Act as intake for new project work and lead team efforts when required.
Ensure compliance with enterprise standards and best practices.
Compensation: $85-95/hr Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education. Must-Have Skills & Technologies
• Technical Expertise:
○ z/OS and components (USS, JES2, VTAM).
○ Programming and scripting: REXX, JCL, COBOL.
○ DB2 database management.
○ CICS transaction processing.
○ Mainframe storage (DASD, tape) and SMP/E for software installs.
○ Networking protocols (VTAM).
○ Security tools (RACF).
• Soft Skills:
○ Excellent communication skills (must-have for vendor and team collaboration).
Strong problem-solving and analytical ability.
Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
Minimum 5 years of experience supporting z/OS environments and working with vendor partners for IaaS/SaaS.

Nice-to-Have Skills
• Experience with Parallel Sysplex, GDPS, or advanced mainframe technologies.
• Familiarity with DevOps and automation tools.
• Exposure to cloud integration and hybrid environments.
• Leadership experience in cross-functional projects.
