Job Description
One of our large retail clients is looking for a Head of Insurance and Risk to join their team. The Head of Insurance and Risk is responsible for developing and executing the enterprise wide risk and insurance strategy for a large, multi site fuel and convenience retail organization. This role oversees global risk governance, insurance program design, and operational risk mitigation across retail stores, fuel operations, logistics fleets, and supply chain networks. A critical component of the position includes direct leadership of casualty claims management, ensuring efficient handling of high frequency, high severity claims typical in the fuel and convenience retail environment. Responsibilities shown below:
Casualty Claims Management
• Oversee end to end management of casualty claims, including:
• General liability (slip and fall, premises liability)
• Auto liability (fleet accidents, fuel transport)
• Workers’ compensation (retail and logistics workforce)
• Product liability (fuel quality, foodservice)
• Establish claims handling protocols, reserving standards, and litigation management strategies.
• Partner with TPAs, defense counsel, insurers, and internal stakeholders to drive timely, cost effective claim resolution.
• Analyze claims data to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for operational improvements.
• Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations governing casualty and workers’ compensation claims.
Insurance Program Leadership
• Design and manage global insurance programs covering property, casualty, auto/fleet, workers’ compensation, environmental liability, cyber, and specialty risks.
• Lead annual renewals, market negotiations, and program structuring to optimize coverage, retentions, and total cost of risk.
• Maintain strong relationships with brokers, carriers, TPAs, and risk engineering partners.
• Ensure insurance programs support business expansion, acquisitions, new store formats, and evolving fuel technologies (EV charging, alternative fuels).
Enterprise Risk Strategy & Governance
• Build and maintain a comprehensive global risk management framework aligned with operational, financial, environmental, and regulatory priorities.
• Identify and assess risks across retail operations, fuel distribution, transportation, environmental compliance, and supply chain.
• Lead enterprise risk committees, reporting processes, and executive level risk communication.
• Advise senior leadership on emerging risks, including environmental liability, cyber threats, regulatory shifts, and market volatility.
Operational Risk & Safety
• Collaborate with operations, environmental health & safety, legal, HR, and supply chain teams to reduce risk exposure across thousands of retail sites and fuel assets.
• Lead development of loss prevention programs targeting:
• Slip and fall reduction
• Fuel handling and environmental safety
• Fleet safety and driver behavior
• Robbery and crime related risk
• Partner with risk engineering teams to implement site level improvements and safety standards.
Financial & Analytical Leadership
• Manage global insurance budgets, including premiums, retentions, deductibles, and claims reserves.
• Deliver executive level reporting on risk metrics, claims performance, and financial impacts.
• Use analytics to forecast risk trends, evaluate program performance, and optimize total cost of risk.
Leadership & Collaboration
• Lead and develop a global team of insurance, claims, and risk professionals.
• Foster a culture of risk awareness and accountability across retail, logistics, and corporate functions.
• Serve as a strategic partner to senior executives, providing insights that balance risk mitigation with business growth.

Required Skills & Experience
• Must be comfortable going onsite 5 days per week
• 12–15+ years of progressive experience in risk management, insurance, or claims leadership, ideally within retail, hospitality, fuel distribution, logistics, or similarly complex operational environments.
• Minimum of 5 years of people leadership experience, including prior experience at the Director level or above (Manager, Director, VP acceptable, provided Director-level responsibility was held at some point).
• Deep expertise in casualty claims, including high volume retail claims and fleet related exposures.
• Deep expertise in insurance strategy, including self insured risk structures, program efficiency (premiums and coverage optimization), and strong carrier relationships
• Strong negotiation skills and established relationships within the insurance and risk management community.
• Proven ability to lead global programs and influence senior stakeholders.
• Exceptional analytical, communication, and strategic thinking capabilities.

• Experience working within the insurance brokerage environment.
• Operations to manage risk and support business execution.
• Strategic and operationally grounded, able to navigate the fast paced, high exposure world of fuel and convenience retail.
