Job Description
Insight Global is looking to hire a Commissioning Engineer for one of our large energy clients. This would be a 6-month contract that is looking to convert to a full-time role. This position would be traveling 100% of the time. All expenses are expected to be personally paid out and then reimbursed in full on a weekly basis during the 6-month contract period - after conversion, expenses will be covered by the client. This candidate would be responsible for conducting high voltage electrical testing and partial diagnostics on site at various HV substation sites. This person would also be responsible for the commissioning of high voltage gas insulated switchgears and commissioning of special switching devices. Someone who has a deep understanding of electrical engineering, electrical schematics, and electrical testing, and can communicate well to customers and coworkers would be a great fit for this position!
Key Responsibilities
• Lead on site commissioning of HV substation equipment, including power transformers, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, switchgear, capacitor banks, reactors, and associated auxiliary systems.
• Commission and test protection & control (P&C) systems, including protective relays, control circuits, interlocks, SCADA/RTU/communications, fault recorders, and control house wiring.
• Develop commissioning plans, test procedures, and detailed schedules aligned with project milestones.
• Perform and document primary and secondary injection testing, functional testing, trip tests, point to point verification, and SCADA integration.
• Conduct handover processes, including customer briefings and operational training.
• Perform system optimizations, including configuration adjustments and parameter tuning.
• Contribute to acceptance testing, routine tests, and type tests as required.
• Determine, specify, or support the selection of required test equipment.
• Oversee and supervise commissioning tasks on site, ensuring quality and safety compliance.

Required Skills & Experience
• 3–5 years of HV substation commissioning experience
• Hands on testing experience with protection relays (SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, etc.)
• Proficiency with test equipment (OMICRON, Megger, Doble)
• Ability to read/interpret substation drawings (one lines, schematics, wiring diagrams)
• Strong understanding of utility standards, IEEE/NESC guidelines
• Experience performing SCADA point checks and control verifications
• Strong troubleshooting and documentation skills
• Ability to work safely in energized substation environments
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
• Experience with GIS substations or EHV systems (230kV+)
• Familiarity with line differential, breaker failure, or comm aided protection schemes
• Knowledge of DNP3, IEC 61850, or substation automation
• NETA certification or utility specific qualifications
• Experience leading small commissioning teams.
