Job Description

The Mechanical Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates
for mechanical construction projects, including HVAC, plumbing, process piping, and related
systems. This role supports preconstruction efforts by analyzing project documents, performing
quantity takeoffs, and developing pricing that aligns with company standards and project
requirements. The Mechanical Estimator collaborates with internal teams and external partners to
ensure timely and complete bid submissions.

Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Cost Development
• Review and interpret project plans, specifications, bid documents, and addenda.
• Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for mechanical systems including HVAC, piping,
plumbing, and equipment.
• Develop accurate labor, material, equipment, and subcontract cost estimates.
• Utilize estimating software and databases to prepare cost proposals and budgets.
• Maintain current pricing for materials, labor rates, and subcontractor costs.
Bid Preparation & Proposal Development
• Prepare complete and organized bid packages, including scope clarifications and
assumptions.
• Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing.
• Analyze bid documents to ensure compliance with project requirements.
• Submit bids within required timelines while ensuring accuracy and completeness.
• Assist in value engineering efforts to optimize project cost and constructability.
Project Collaboration
• Work closely with project managers, engineers, and operations teams during
preconstruction.
• Participate in bid review meetings and provide input on pricing and scope.
• Support handoff meetings to operations following project award.
• Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and suppliers regarding scope and
pricing.
Risk Review & Documentation
• Identify scope gaps, inconsistencies, and risks within project documents.
• Document assumptions, exclusions, and clarifications within estimates.
• Maintain well-organized estimating files and records for future reference.
Continuous Improvement
• Support process improvements in estimating workflows and tools.
• Assist in developing standardized templates and procedures.
• Stay informed on industry trends, materials, and construction methods.

Required Skills & Experience

Education & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
(preferred), or equivalent experience.
• 3–7+ years of experience in mechanical estimating or related construction role.
• Experience with process mechanical projects preferred.
Technical Skills
• Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Trimble, QuickPen, Bluebeam, or similar).
• Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
• Knowledge of HVAC, piping, and plumbing systems and construction practices.
• Familiarity with labor productivity, cost control, and budgeting techniques.
