Relay Protection Engineer

Insight Global is looking for a Relay Protection Engineer for an end client located in Spring Valley, NY. This role is 3 days in office and 2 days fully remote. This person will be joining the Electrical Engineering team to design, apply, and support utility grade relay protection systems across transmission and substation assets. Under limited supervision, this role supports small to large relay projects and provides engineering guidance to transmission, substation, and operations groups throughout the company. The engineer performs relay setting calculations, fault analysis, and coordination studies using industry tools, while supporting field personnel with testing, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis. Responsibilities include preparing design sketches for relay one lines, schematics, and construction drawings, as well as developing outage reports and corrective action plans following system disturbances. This role also supports feasibility studies through preliminary cost estimates and participates in equipment factory testing. Strong emphasis is placed on safety, compliance, and adherence to Company policies, regulatory standards, and customer centric values. The engineer participates in departmental meetings, serves on internal committees, represents the Company at industry events, and takes part in emergency storm response assignments. Staying current with relay protection and transmission planning standards and industry developments is a key expectation of the role.

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
• 1+ years of relay engineering experience in a utility or transmission/substation environment
• Proven experience running relay projects, approving drawings, and reviewing fault events
• Hands on experience with transmission relay design, settings, and testing
• Ability to interpret one line diagrams, schematics, logic diagrams, and wiring drawings
• Experience performing relay setting calculations (electromechanical, solid state, and microprocessor relays)
• Proficiency using ASPEN or CAPE and a relay software (GE, Schnieder, SEL, Siemens, or etc.)
• Familiarity with NERC, NPCC, and RFC standards related to protection systems
• Strong written, verbal, analytical, and technical skills
• Experience with vendor relay logic files and communication assisted protection systems
• Experience supporting field testing, outage analysis, and root cause investigations
• Experience participating in feasibility studies and preliminary engineering cost estimates
• Experience delivering technical presentations and supporting cross functional teams
