Job Description

Day to day, this role is focused on supporting the design and engineering of utility scale substations across a mix of small to large projects. This position is 3 days onsite in Spring Valley, NY and 2 days fully remote. The engineer will develop and review substation layouts, electrical drawings, and equipment specifications, while preparing technical calculations, estimates, and engineering documents required for feasibility studies and project execution. They will review, analyze, and prepare reports to evaluate design alternatives and determine best practices related to substation arrangement, grounding, protection, battery sizing, lighting, and insulation coordination. The role also involves providing engineering support during construction by responding to questions, performing field walkdowns as needed, and supporting projects before, during, and after construction. In addition, the engineer will coordinate with internal teams and operations groups, stay current on applicable IEEE, ANSI, NESC, and NERC/FERC standards, attend departmental meetings and committees, and represent the company in industry or regulatory discussions when required.

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
• 5+ years of substation design and engineering experience
• Experience with substation equipment, such as:
o Power transformers
o Circuit breakers
o Switchgear
o Relays and protection systems
• Strong knowledge of high voltage systems (medium to extra high voltage)
• Ability to read, review, develop, and support:
o One lines
o AC/DC schematics
o Wiring diagrams
o Panel layouts
• Ability to lead a project and take on project management duties such as experience dealing with budgets, schedules, scope of work documents, and estimates
• Experience working to utility standards, NESC, IEEE, or similar
• Experience supporting projects through design, review, and construction phases
