Job Description

1. Monitoring & Maintaining On Air Systems
Throughout the day, the engineer continuously monitors the health of distribution chains:
• Overseeing on air transmission, IP circuits, SDI/ASI transport paths, and cloud based delivery systems.
• Using monitoring tools (e.g., Evertz, TAG, MediaProxy, DataMiner, Grafana, etc.) to watch for alarms, signal degradation, bitrate fluctuations, captioning issues, and metadata integrity.
• Ensuring SCTE 35/104 triggers, closed captions, ad markers, and other downstream signaling are present and correct.
(Examples reflected in responsibilities from HBC - NBC Broadcast Engineer and HBC - NBC - DevOps Engineer – Monitoring and Control.)
2. Responding to Live On Air Issues
A core part of the job is fast paced, real time troubleshooting:
• Responding immediately to outage calls or active alarms.
• Diagnosing failures in routing systems, encoders, multiplexers, automation, or cloud distribution.
• Escalating to Level 3 engineering or vendors when necessary.
• Executing quick workarounds to keep the broadcast uninterrupted.
(Seen in roles requiring instant action and triage during live broadcasts.)
3. Supporting Live Production & Control Rooms
Engineers frequently partner with live production teams:
• Ensuring clean handoff and routing of feeds into control rooms.
• Supporting virtualized production environments (AWS/Azure based control rooms).
• Validating new software or automation releases before they go live.
(Aligned with duties supporting Live On Air control rooms and validating production tools.)
4. Managing Broadcast Infrastructure (IP & SDI)
Modern distribution engineering is hybrid:
• Maintaining and configuring SDI routers, IP gateways, and SMPTE 2110 environments.
• Working with tools such as Nevion, VideoIPath, Evertz EQX/EXE, Grass Valley, Blackmagic, Sony, and Dante systems.
• Ensuring proper PTP timing, multicast routing, and network orchestration.
(Extensively referenced in the skill and requirement sets across broadcast systems engineering roles.)
5. Preventive Maintenance & System Health Checks
Daily tasks include proactive system upkeep:
• Running diagnostic checks on hardware and software.
• Applying OS patches, firmware updates, and security upgrades.
• Performing QC checks on playout paths, automation, and media servers.
• Documenting all maintenance and operational changes.
(Reflected in responsibilities involving system health checks and preventive maintenance.)
6. Workflow & Process Documentation
A modern distribution engineer also contributes to operational clarity:
• Creating and updating system diagrams, SOPs, and troubleshooting guides.
• Identifying documentation gaps and refining internal technical resources.
(Highlighted in needs for documenting complex broadcast processes.)
7. Collaboration Across Engineering & Operations
Because distribution sits at the intersection of every signal path, engineers work with:
• Transmission operations
• Field/newsgathering teams
• IT/cloud teams
• Vendors (Evertz, Nevion, Imagine, etc.)
• Production & master control operators
This constant communication ensures continuity across the broadcast ecosystem.
