Job Description

A client of Insight Global's is hiring for a contract to hire database engineer. They are currently seeking a highly skilled Database Engineer with a strong blend of database architecture and engineering expertise to support a key initiative focused on database optimization and architecture review. This role requires deep hands-on experience with Microsoft SQL Server (MS-SQL) across both on-premises and cloud environments, with a focus on performance, scalability, and maintainability. The ideal candidate will be not only technically exceptional but also a strong communicator who can effectively engage with stakeholders across technical and non-technical teams. You’ll be expected to clearly articulate, and implement recommendations, influence decision-making, and drive consensus on complex database design and performance matters

Key Responsibilities:
• Lead the review and redesign of existing database architecture to enhance performance
and scalability.
• Analyze and tune complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and indexing strategies.
• Implement solutions for data sharding, partitioning, archiving, and purging to manage
large data volumes effectively.
• Work across on-premise and cloud-hosted database environments (e.g., SQL Server on
VMs and Azure SQL) to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
• Engage with cross-functional stakeholders, translating technical findings into clear,
actionable insights and recommendations.
• Collaborate with development, infrastructure, and DevOps teams to integrate database
improvements into the broader tech ecosystem.
• Monitor, diagnose, and resolve database performance issues proactively.
• Develop technical documentation and present findings to both technical and executive
audiences.
• Recommend and implement tools and automation to support database observability
and lifecycle management.

Required Skills & Experience

○ 5+ years as a Database Engineer or Architect
○ Deep technical expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (MS-SQL), including T-SQL, indexing, execution plans, and optimization.
8+ years Hands-on experience with Azure Cloud Platform (e.g., Azure SQL Database, SQL Server on IaaS) Proficient in data modelling, schema normalization/denormalization, and capacity planning

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

- Experience with cloud migration or hybrid environments.
- Knowledge of ETL processes, data warehousing, or data lake integration.
- Familiarity with DevOps pipelines for database CI/CD.
Exposure to monitoring and observability tools for database performance (e.g., Redgate, SolarWinds, SQL Sentry).
