Job Description

Job Title: Grading Crew Supervisor
Department: Earthwork & Infrastructure
Reports To: VP of Earthwork & Infrastructure
Location: Various project sites across Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Montana
Status: Hourly (Non-Exempt)
Pay Rate: $35–$50 per hour, Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education, plus fringe benefits
Job Type: Direct Hire | Full-Time | Seasonal
Typical Schedule: Project-dependent; approximately 70+ hours per week during construction season
Start Date: February 2026

Position Summary
The Grading Crew Supervisor is responsible for managing daily field operations of the grading crew to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of earthwork and grading activities on highway, roadway, and civil infrastructure projects. This role combines hands-on leadership with technical expertise, coordinating personnel, equipment operators, and trucking logistics to meet production goals, maintain safety standards, and ensure compliance with project specifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Supervise and direct grading crew activities, including excavation, embankment, fine grading, and subgrade preparation.
• Interpret project plans, blueprints, and survey stakes; verify grade accuracy and alignment with specifications.
• Coordinate with project managers, surveyors, and trucking dispatch to maintain balanced site logistics and timely material movement.
• Plan daily work assignments, equipment needs, and crew staffing to achieve schedule and productivity targets.
• Conduct weekly safety meetings and enforce company and OSHA safety protocols.
• Train and mentor operators and laborers on grading techniques, equipment operation, and quality standards.
• Monitor work progress to ensure proper drainage, slopes, compaction, and tolerances.
• Inspect work zones for quality control, erosion prevention, and environmental compliance.
• Maintain accurate daily reports, including quantities, equipment hours, and labor tracking.
• Communicate effectively with project management and field teams to resolve operational issues.
• Coordinate with subcontractors, utility locators, and trucking operations for safe and efficient workflow.
• Ensure equipment is operated and maintained per company standards and manufacturer guidelines.

Required Skills & Experience

Qualifications
• 3–5 years of experience in heavy civil or highway grading.
• 1–2 years in a leadership or supervisory role preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred with acceptable driving record.
• Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations.
• Strong understanding of earthmoving, soil stabilization, and grading operations.

Competencies & Skills
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and grade stakes.
• Proficiency with slope control and GPS/laser-guided equipment systems preferred.
• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Commitment to safety, quality, and efficiency in all operations.
• Ability to operate heavy equipment (dozer, motor grader, excavator, scraper, etc.) as needed.

Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and standing.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, dust, noise).
• Tolerance for long hours and extended periods of standing and walking on uneven terrain.

Work Environment
• Field-based construction sites with exposure to heavy equipment, traffic, and changing conditions.
• Seasonal overtime and extended hours during peak construction season.
• Requires travel to multiple job sites; overnight stays may be necessary.
