Job Description

As a Sr Engineer you will be considered a technical expert in one or more phases of application and/or systems engineering. This includes providing design recommendations based on long-term IT organization strategy and expertise regarding the integration of applications across the business. You will determine specifications, plan, design, and develop business critical software solutions, utilizing appropriate software engineering processes - either individually or in concert with product team.

Participate in teams collaboration sessions to provide technical expertise to solve a problem/remove technical roadblocks for the team
Participate in product planning and implementation. Helps team to understand and decompose work
Participate and engage in Sprint Refinements, Sprint Planning, Daily Standups, Sprint Retrospectives and Sprint Demos
Provides clear updates on work items and reasons for delivery issues.
Develop and maintain comprehensive technical design, and development documentation.
Ensure code changes work seamlessly across all environments, with a proactive approach to testing beyond QA.

Defining Engineering Standards and Patterns
Contribute to develop engineering practices , templates and frameworks in collaboration with the team.

DevOps
Continuously assessing technology to build more stable, scalable, and resilient software; Use data to measure progress
Promote and expand on the use of the CI/CD pipeline to improve the deployment and build process.
Participates in the team support rotation and provides expert knowledge on focus subsystems.

Coaching Engineers
Mentor and train new or less experienced team members, sharing knowledge and expertise, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
Provide domain expertise on software products to help them new or less experienced team members learn/grow their skills and contribute as part of the team

Recruiting/Building Talent
Engage in the tech community to build the Thrivent technology brand and position as the employer of choice in the market
Contribute to the recruitment to define the structure of the interview process to hire the right talent to the team.

Required Skills & Experience

- 8-10+ years of engineering experience, specifically within back-end Java development, utilizing Springboot.
- Ample experience building back end microservices (REST APIs)
- Experience with building Kafka connectors and streams
- Experience utilizing GraphQL and Dynamo DB
- Expertise with AWS Cloud
- Experience ulitizing monitoring tools such as Datadog, ELK or Swarmia


Specific technical stack:

Technical Skills: Deep knowledge of Java 17, Spring Boot 2-3, REST and SOAP APIs, Kafka connectors and Kafka Streams, GraphQL, GitHub Actions, Terraform, RabbitMQ, DynamoDB, Openshift, Azure AD, HashiCorp Vault, and JSON, Yaml.

Architectural Knowledge: Expertise in event-driven architecture, pub/sub models, and microservices.

Monitoring Tools: Familiarity with monitoring tools such as Datadog, ELK, or Swarmia.

Software Tools: Experience with Atlassian products, including Jira and Confluence.

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

- Financial Services experience specifically life, health, and annuity experience
- Experience with Apache Avro - a new technology they're going to be starting to use
