Job Description
A large concrete construction company is seeking experienced Line & Grade professionals to support large-scale industrial concrete projects, including data centers and manufacturing facilities. This role is responsible for precise layout, control, and verification of concrete structures, ensuring all work meets strict tolerance requirements—often to 1/16 of an inch.
This position may be filled at the Instrument Man, Party Chief, or Senior Line & Grade level, depending on experience. Candidates will work independently or lead small layout teams, collaborating closely with project management, superintendents, BIM teams, and field crews.
Travel: Michigan region
Responsibilities:
Perform accurate concrete layout for foundations, slabs, walls, embeds, and structural elements
Establish, maintain, and verify site control points (horizontal and vertical)
Execute pre‑pour and post‑pour as‑built surveys and verify against drawings and BIM models
Operate total stations, lasers, levels, and data collectors for layout and verification
Translate construction drawings and BIM models into precise field layout
Ensure layout work meets tight tolerances (often ±1/16”)
Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve layout, tolerance, and constructability issues
Coordinate daily with superintendents, project managers, BIM, and field crews
Lead and guide layout crews as needed; mentor Instrument Men (Party Chief+ level)
Maintain accurate layout documentation, as‑builts, and field updates
Follow Baker safety standards and participate in jobsite safety activities

Required Skills & Experience
6–8+ years of experience in industrial or commercial concrete layout
Strong hands-on experience with total stations, lasers, and digital levels
Deep understanding of concrete layout, controls, and tolerances
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and BIM models
Willingness to travel regionally to where the work is located
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Industrial concrete background (data centers, factories, processing facilities)
Experience with millwright or industrial layout concepts applied to concrete
Drone experience for layout or verification (preferred, not required)
Strong “carpenter mindset” — understands how concrete is formed, poured, and built
Experience working from BIM models to field layout (D2D)
Familiarity with formwork layout coordination
