Directional Drill Operator

Insight Global is seeking an experienced HDD Directional Drill Operator in the Grand Rapids, MI and Battle Creek, MI areas to lead and execute underground directional drilling projects with precision and professionalism. This role requires strong technical drilling knowledge, proven heavy equipment operation skills, and the ability to work in fast‑paced construction environments. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with excavation, utility installation, and machinery such as excavators, backhoes, water trucks, and dump trucks.

In this role, you will manage and operate horizontal directional drilling equipment while working with a field crew through all phases of underground construction. Your day will include coordinating with locators and project managers, and ensuring all drilling, potholing, locating, vault setting, and restoration tasks are completed safely and accurately. You will operate and oversee the use of heavy machinery, conduct routine equipment maintenance—particularly on Vermeer drilling systems—and troubleshoot mechanical issues to minimize downtime. You’ll maintain detailed project documentation, enforce OSHA and MDOT safety protocols, and ensure all work aligns with environmental and regulatory standards. This position requires strong communication, and the ability to adapt to changing site conditions.

- Proven experience in horizontal directional drilling (HDD)
- Strong background in heavy equipment operation (excavators, loaders, backhoes, graders, water trucks, dump trucks, tankers)
- Mechanical knowledge of fuel and hydraulic systems

- Experience with Vermeer equipment
- Background in FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) construction operations
- Familiarity with underground utility installation best practices
