Job Description

Insight Global is hiring a Modeling and Control Engineer to join our client's model-based development team. This role encompasses end-to-end powertrain modeling and controller development—from collecting measurements from engines and vehicles, through early-phase concept studies, to production logic and calibration. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in control and optimization, vehicle dynamics, and thermal and fluid dynamics related to electrified powertrain components.

In this position, you will gain hands-on experience developing and managing various powertrain models and controls, supporting activities ranging from collecting test measurements on engine dynamometers and prototype vehicles, through early concept studies, to production calibration. You will use modeling, scripting, and optimization tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, GT-Suite, AMESim, and Python to process measurement data from technicians, run simulations to establish baselines, explore different powertrain concepts, and support production calibration and logic development. You will work closely with design and calibration engineers to understand their needs, translate them into clear research and simulation problems, and deliver innovative, high-quality solutions.

Your responsibilities will include developing and calibrating control-oriented and plant models based on first principles or data-driven approaches. You will work with vehicle dynamics, internal combustion engine, transmission, and thermal/cooling circuit models for electrified powertrains, spanning early concept to production stages, to perform feasibility, sensitivity, and optimization studies.
What you’ll be doing
• Collaborate with design and calibration engineers to translate their vague and uncertain research ideas and requests into clear, actionable problem statements, and deliver innovative, high-quality solutions.
• Work closely with test engineers and technicians to collect test measurements, perform data cleaning, and create visualizations to prepare for simulations.
• Develop and calibrate control-oriented and plant models using first principles, data-driven methods, and machine learning approaches for control system implementation.
• Conduct feasibility, sensitivity, and optimization studies on powertrain models from early concept through production stages.
• Create detailed schedules to visualize tasks, track progress and issues, and regularly report to management.

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, or a related field; Master’s degree is a plus.
• Proficiency in MATLAB and Python libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, and Scikit-learn.
• Hands-on, practical experience using Simulink, GT-Suite (GT-Power) and AMESim for vehicle dynamics, internal combustion, HVAC cooling circuit, and drivetrain modeling.
• Deep understanding of vehicle dynamics, thermal and fluid dynamics for automotive applications, including internal combustion engines, HVAC cooling circuits, and drivetrain.
• Knowledge of current machine learning trends and ability to apply ML solutions to various modelling and control applications.
• Detail-oriented mindset with a strong ability to identify patterns and trends in data.

Benefit packages for this role will start on the 31st day of employment and include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as HSA, FSA, and DCFSA account options, and 401k retirement account access with employer matching. Employees in this role are also entitled to paid sick leave and/or other paid time off as provided by applicable law.
