An international law firm spanning across the US/Europe/Asia is looking for a SQL Database Administrator to join their enterprise applications team. The role can sit near an office in following states - MA, IL, CO, CA, NY (office)/NJ/CT, DC, VA, WA. This role can work remote with the occasional onsite meeting and currently there is one other DBA on the team. The firm is in the Top 50 largest law firms in the world; they focus on corporate, litigation, intellectual property, fund formation, public markets, employment, life sciences (#1 law firm for tech and life sciences IPOs), clean technology, real estate, financial services, retail, regulatory and energy practices. This resource will be a SQL expert.
The firm's Information Services (IS) embraces a culture of customer service excellences, and all members of the department are expected to move this agenda forward. To that end, the IS Enterprise Database Engineer position is expected to recognize that we are here at the law firm as a service organization first and foremost and will be evaluated on this requirement equal in importance to the technical or operational responsibilities outlined later in this document. This role requires a service-oriented mindset, high sense of ownership of the problems and requests assigned, focus on managing and resolving issues in a timely fashion, establishing, and maintaining communication with technology customers to keep them updated with status of their requests, initiating, and performing changes on the production systems and proactively escalating any issues that cannot be resolved within the established timeframes.
The Sr. Enterprise Database Engineer configures, troubleshoots, manages, and maintains relational databases including associated applications where appropriate. Provides recommendations on database programming, design, and systems analysis. Specific duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Position Responsibilities:
Recreates steps taken by users to determine source of problem and if database related, provides correction.
Coordinates and performs installation of database upgrades and fixes.
Performs regular maintenance activities to ensure that all databases are running optimally.
Analyzes performance for all databases and applies tuning methods to optimize database efficiency.
Establishes backup schedules and configuration for all databases and monitors backups on an ongoing basis.
Implements production modifications of stored procedures and triggers for respective databases.
Configures and initializes new databases as required by new applications.
Performs aspects of Systems Analyst job based on type of project and resource allocation.
Reads manuals, periodicals, technical reports and uses online services to increase database administration knowledge.
Installs, upgrades and maintains firm-wide, server-based databases and database applications including Microsoft SQL, SQL reporting services both on premise, hybrid, and Cloud systems, including:
Install and upgrade SQL when necessary;
Monitor the Database Server's health and tuning accordingly;
Management and proper utilization of disk or other storage space;
Design backup and recovery procedures, documentation of same, including rollback functioning;
Manage database users and security access;
Provide information to Developers (in-house, consultants) to create applications and minimize duplication of data;
Establish and enforce standards including naming schemes, conversions;
Understand SQL tools and SQL scheduling to ensure timely backups, maintenance, notifications to IT Management in the event of a system failure;
Ensuring 24/7 access to that databases are continually protected and on-line;
Constant tracking bugs, fixes and testing of mission-critical data;
Researching anomalies and work-arounds.
Analyzes and resolves database-related problems experienced by users of workstations connecting to server-based applications; develops procedures to avoid database corrupting practices by users.
Works with software vendors' technical support staff to deploy new applications and resolve complex problems and database systems.
Assist SQL programmers with data import, export and manipulation among various applications.
Train, write/provide documentation and troubleshoot databases and applications as needed.
All other duties as assigned or required.
Required Skills & Experience
- 4+ years' hands-on technical experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2017, and 2019+ Database Administration.
- 4+ years' of Windows 2016, 2019, and IIS.
- Design, Configuration, Implementation and Administration of MS SQL Server Database Server and relevant Storage and Network configurations.
- Design and execution of Data extract, transform and load techniques (ETL)
- Proficient in Troubleshooting/Performance tuning of SQL 2014/2016/2017/2019 Databases.
