Job Description

Insight Global is looking to hire a Sustainability SME to sit in a hybrid environment in Frederick or Gaithersburg, MD. This individual will be responsible for embedding sustainability, decarbonization, and resource efficiency requirements into capital projects as designs progress from concept through detailed engineering, procurement, and construction. Additionally, the Sustainability SME will be responsible for translating enterprise sustainability goals into actionable engineering criteria, ensuring facilities and utilities are designed, specified, and documented to meet energy, water, carbon, waste, and biodiversity targets without compromising safety, quality, or operability.

Key Responsibilities Include:
- Sustainability Basis of Design: Define and maintain project-specific sustainability criteria (energy, water, carbon, waste, refrigerants) through design maturity.
- Energy & Carbon by Design: Develop decarbonization and energy strategies (electrification, heat recovery, heat pumps, efficient HVAC, advanced controls) with quantified utility and carbon impacts.
- Water Stewardship: Specify water efficiency, reuse, and segregation strategies (CIP/SIP optimization, condensate recovery, grey/black water separation, cooling tower optimization) aligned with process and quality.
- Embodied Carbon & Materials: Select low-carbon materials (EPD-backed concrete/steel, low-GWP insulation/refrigerants, recycled content), apply circular design, and minimize packaging/waste.
- Lifecycle & TCO Modeling: Perform lifecycle cost and carbon analyses (LCCA/LCA) to guide capex/opex trade-offs, incentives, and carbon pricing.
- Codes & Certifications: Ensure compliance with codes and frameworks (LEED/BREEAM, WELL, ASHRAE, ISO, local energy codes) and define certification pathways.
- Utilities & Process Integration: Collaborate across disciplines to embed sustainability in utility systems (boilers, chillers, heat pumps, compressed air, clean steam) and process controls.
- Measurement & Verification: Define metering, sub-metering, trending, and BAS/EMS analytics for performance tracking, FDD, and commissioning.
- Design Reviews: Conduct sustainability reviews at 50%/90% design; document improvements on drawings, P&IDs, sequences, and specs.
- Commissioning & Performance: Integrate sustainability into commissioning; define functional tests, seasonal tuning, and acceptance criteria.
- Renewables & Storage: Assess readiness for onsite renewables (PV, solar thermal), storage, and microgrids; coordinate utility interconnection.
- Waste & Logistics: Incorporate waste segregation, recycling, hazardous handling, and reusable packaging into layouts and logistics.
- Biodiversity & Site: Influence landscaping, stormwater controls, heat island mitigation, and light pollution reduction.
- Documentation & Governance: Prepare sustainability narratives, decision logs, and embodied carbon reports; maintain change control.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Align with corporate teams; present business cases; support supplier compliance.
- Lessons Learned & Standards: Capture insights and update corporate guidelines and specifications for sustainable design.

Compensation:
$75.00/hr to $85.00/hr.

Exact compensation may vary based on several factors, including skills, experience, and education.
