Job Description

The Stationary Engineer is responsible for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of a higher education's Central Plant Boiler and associated systems. This role ensures optimal performance of high-capacity heating and cooling systems, provides leadership to engineering staff, and responds to urgent operational needs across campus during off-hours.


Key Responsibilities:
Serve as the operating engineer responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Central Plant Boiler.

Coordinate inspection, maintenance, and repair activities, including emergency and non-emergency situations.

Respond to abnormal operating conditions by switching pumps, boilers, and other critical systems as needed.

Act as a liaison with contractors during service and repair operations.

Operate and maintain central station air conditioning and refrigeration systems, including reciprocating, centrifugal, or absorption units with single compressors and chillers exceeding 500 tons.

Monitor and record operational data such as temperature, pressure, fuel consumption, water levels, voltage loads, and generator balance.

Document all operational and maintenance activities during the shift and prepare detailed reports.

Monitor and adjust safety control equipment and manual/automatic controls to ensure systems operate within defined standards.

Respond to urgent maintenance and operational requests during off-hours; manage key control systems and maintain accurate records of all activities.

Operate and maintain tools and equipment related to the trade; ensure work areas are clean and safe upon project completion.

Perform water quality testing and adjust chemical treatments to maintain proper water conditions in plant systems.

Required Skills & Experience

High School Diploma or GED
Five years in the operation of a boiler room facility, three years of which involved boilers over 500 horsepower and chillers in excess of 500 tons
Licensure as a First Grade Stationary Engineer in the State of Maryland
Class C Driver’s License valid in the State of Maryland
