Job Description
This insurance company is looking for an AI Lead Engineer to join a newly formed centralized AI team supporting multiple business units. This individual will partner directly with broker, underwriting, and business leadership teams to identify high-value AI opportunities, gather requirements, and guide projects from concept through production deployment. The AI Lead Engineer will provide technical leadership across AI initiatives, oversee project execution, mentor engineers, and ensure solutions align with business objectives, security standards, and scalability requirements.
This role will be responsible for architecting and delivering LLM-powered applications, RAG solutions, and AI agents while helping establish reusable frameworks, development standards, and AI best practices across the organization. Additionally, the Lead Engineer will collaborate closely with senior leadership, provide regular project status updates, communicate risks and recommendations, and drive successful delivery of AI project milestones across multiple business units.
An excellent candidate has a strong track record of delivering production-grade AI solutions, leading engineering teams, managing enterprise AI projects, and communicating effectively with both technical and executive stakeholders. Additional value comes from experience with LangChain, Claude, AI agents, regulated environments, and building scalable AI platforms that can be leveraged across an enterprise.

Required Skills & Experience
8+ years of software engineering experience with 3–5+ years in AI/ML development
Proven experience delivering multiple AI solutions into production environments
Strong programming experience in Python plus React, Node.js, or .NET
Experience with LLM integrations (OpenAI, Azure OpenAI, Anthropic/Claude)
Experience with Claude Code or similar AI development tooling
Hands-on experience building RAG pipelines and utilizing frameworks such as LangChain
Experience designing enterprise AI architectures and making deployment decisions around cloud hosting, scalability, latency, security, and cost optimization
Strong understanding of MLOps practices including model monitoring, versioning, governance, and performance tuning
Experience leading AI engineering teams, mentoring developers, and driving technical direction
Proven ability to gather requirements from business stakeholders and translate them into scalable AI solutions
Experience managing project deliverables, timelines, technical roadmaps, and development priorities
Strong communication skills with experience presenting updates and recommendations to senior leadership and executives
Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Familiarity with AI sandbox environments for rapid prototyping and experimentation
Experience building AI agents and integrating solutions via APIs and webhooks
Exposure to enterprise platforms such as Salesforce, Applied Epic, or Duck Creek
Background in insurance or other regulated industries (claims, underwriting, HIPAA, governance-heavy environments)
Experience establishing AI engineering standards, reusable frameworks, and best practices across multiple teams
Experience leading cross-functional AI initiatives supporting multiple business units
