Job Description

We are seeking a motivated Fiber Design Technician with 1-3 years of experience supporting fiber optic network design projects within the utility or telecommunications industry. This role will assist with the planning, design, and documentation of aerial and underground fiber networks supporting broadband expansion, utility communications, and smart grid initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have experience utilizing GIS, CAD, or fiber design software and possess a strong understanding of outside plant (OSP) construction practices, utility infrastructure, and fiber network fundamentals.

Develop fiber optic network designs for aerial and underground distribution systems.
Create construction drawings, permit exhibits, splice diagrams, and route maps using CAD and GIS-based design tools.
Support fiber routing, cable placement, and network expansion projects while ensuring compliance with client and utility standards.
Conduct desktop analysis of utility poles, underground facilities, rights-of-way, and existing infrastructure.
Review field data, survey information, and as-built documentation to produce accurate engineering packages.
Coordinate with utility clients, project managers, permitting agencies, and field personnel throughout the design process.
Assist with make-ready assessments, pole loading considerations, and utility attachment requirements.
Ensure design deliverables are completed accurately and within project schedules.
Perform quality control reviews of fiber design packages before client submission.
Support permitting, easement, and joint-use coordination efforts as needed.

Required Skills & Experience

Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Telecommunications, Drafting, or a related technical field preferred.
1-3 years of experience in fiber design, OSP engineering, utility engineering, or telecommunications network design.
Basic understanding of fiber optic infrastructure, fiber routing, splice concepts, and outside plant construction.
Experience using one or more of the following:
AutoCAD
MicroStation
ArcGIS
IQGeo
OSPInsight
Katapult
Vetro
Other fiber design platforms
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Outlook.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to read and interpret utility maps, construction drawings, and engineering documentation.
